Description

La Violette 2017 is a refined, classically styled Bordeaux that leans into elegance rather than sheer power. Compared with more recent vintages, it shows a cleaner, more restrained profile, emphasizing purity of fruit and finesse in the glass. This is a thoughtful Pomerol that showcases the charm of the 2017 vintage with precision and grace.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Violette 2017 reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color, suggesting both concentration and freshness rather than over-extraction. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with baked plums, blueberry compote and blackberry tart, followed by notes of spice cake, fine chocolate box nuances and a dusting of powdered cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a supple, mouth-filling core of dark fruit framed by silky, fine-grained tannins. A vibrant thread of acidity runs through the mid-palate, giving the wine lift and definition. Compared with richer vintages, the 2017 shows a slightly more red-toned fruit profile toward the finish, bringing in hints of red plum and fresh berries, alongside a gentle grip and a pinch of crushed black pepper on the aftertaste. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the structure and balance to develop additional complexity over the next 8–12 years.

Production
La Violette is a tiny, highly regarded estate in Pomerol, where old-vine Merlot grows on some of the appellation’s prized clay and gravel soils. The terroir naturally limits yields, concentrating flavor and giving the wines their hallmark perfume and depth. Grapes are harvested by hand, with rigorous sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it to the vat. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatics and finesse, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new, to add texture, polish and subtle spice without overshadowing the fruit.

Food & Serving
La Violette 2017’s balance of richness and freshness makes it highly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, veal chops or a rich mushroom risotto, as well as truffled poultry or aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and silky structure. A decant of 45–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant will suffice.

Producer
Château La Violette is one of Pomerol’s cult micro-estates, known for its tiny production and intensely focused, Merlot-driven wines. Situated on some of the appellation’s best-positioned parcels, the estate has built a reputation for crafting deeply aromatic, concentrated yet refined cuvées that reflect both terroir and meticulous cellar work. Over the years, La Violette has become a sought-after name among collectors and enthusiasts of right-bank Bordeaux, consistently recognized for its limited availability, artisanal approach and the remarkable purity and texture of its wines.
