Description
La Turque 1998 from E. Guigal is one of Côte-Rôtie’s great prestige wines, admired for its depth, power, and remarkable finesse. This single-vineyard Syrah blend with a small proportion of Viognier captures the northern Rhône’s signature balance of elegance, spice, and structure, and comes from one of the region’s most celebrated names.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Turque 1998 typically shows a deep garnet to mature ruby hue with developing brick tones at the rim. The nose is layered and complex, offering black fruits, smoked meat, olive tapenade, violet, pepper, leather, and subtle floral notes from the Viognier component, with time revealing earthy, truffle-like nuances.
On the palate, it is full-bodied yet finely textured, with ripe dark fruit, savory mineral depth, and the kind of polished tannins that define top Côte-Rôtie. The finish is long, spicy, and persistent, with excellent balance between richness and tension. At this stage, it is likely drinking beautifully, though well-stored bottles can still hold additional nuance.
Production
La Turque comes from a prized vineyard site in Côte-Rôtie, where steep granite and schist slopes create a demanding but expressive terroir. The vines benefit from excellent sun exposure and the Rhône’s moderating influence, helping produce ripe fruit with marked aromatics and firm structure. Harvesting is carried out by hand, which is essential on these dramatic slopes, and the wine is vinified with a focus on preserving concentration, purity, and the layered character of the site.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb, venison, duck breast, braised short ribs, or game birds with herbs and mushrooms. It also works well with aged cheeses and deeply flavored Mediterranean dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if the bottle has been well cellared, as this will help the aromas open and the structure soften.
Producer
E. Guigal is one of the most important producers in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1946 and built into a reference point for both regional and elite single-vineyard wines. The estate is especially renowned for its legendary Côte-Rôtie cuvées—La Mouline, La Landonne, and La Turque—which helped elevate the prestige of the appellation on the world stage. Guigal’s reputation for consistency, intensity, and age-worthy wines has made it one of the most respected names in French wine.
