Description
La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano 2012 is a commanding expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most dramatic single vineyards. Crafted in a warm, structured vintage, this wine marries power and precision, offering serious depth for collectors and enthusiasts alike. It stands out for its combination of ripe fruit, sculpted tannins, and the unmistakable mineral spine that has made Valeirano a reference-point cru in Piemonte.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Valeirano shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with an orange-tinged rim, hinting at its evolving complexity. The nose opens with dark cherries, macerated raspberries, and dried rose petals, layered with notes of licorice, tar, cedar, and crushed stones. Hints of violets, sweet spice, leather and a touch of tobacco appear with air, reflecting both the site and the wine’s maturity.
On the palate, this Barbaresco is focused and firmly structured, with Nebbiolo’s hallmark tannins now starting to soften into a velvety yet still grippy texture. Flavours of black cherry, wild strawberry and plum are interwoven with savory nuances of herbs, tea leaf, leather, and earthy minerality. The acidity is vibrant and refreshing, carrying the wine through a long, complex finish with notes of spice and rose. While already showing beautiful tertiary development, the 2012 still has the concentration and structure to age gracefully for another 8–10 years, evolving further in nuance and silkiness.
Production
Valeirano is a steep, high-altitude cru in Treiso, within the Barbaresco zone, known for poor, calcareous soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. La Spinetta typically harvests by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe Nebbiolo grapes are selected. After careful sorting, the grapes are traditionally vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation and extended maceration to extract colour, aromatics and fine tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak (a portion of which is new), allowing structure and complexity to develop while maintaining the vineyard’s signature minerality and tension, before being bottled with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a natural match for rich, savoury dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, truffle risotto, mushroom-based dishes, game birds, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino. For the best experience, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the aromatics and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Founded by the Rivetti family, La Spinetta has evolved from a small Moscato producer into one of Piemonte’s most highly regarded estates for Barbaresco and Barolo. The winery is known for its intense, site-expressive single-vineyard wines, modern yet precise approach in the cellar, and meticulous work in the vineyard. In Barbaresco, crus such as Valeirano, Gallina and Starderi have helped cement La Spinetta’s reputation as a benchmark producer, regularly earning high scores from international critics and playing a key role in showcasing the depth and elegance Nebbiolo can achieve in this historic region.
