La Pruina, Salice Salento 2023

La Pruina Salice Salento 2023 is a characterful red from Puglia that captures the region’s warm southern charm with impressive finesse and drinkability. Born from a family estate that moved from selling fruit to crafting its own wines in 2012, it combines local grapes with a style that is both authentic and elegantly modern.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a ruby-red colour. The nose opens with ripe red fruit, rose hips, and a hint of spiced biscuit, giving it a warm and inviting aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is smooth, balanced, and easy to enjoy, with the fruit framed by gentle oak influence and a subtle structural grip from 6 months of ageing in wood. It finishes with good freshness and a pleasing sense of elegance, making it very approachable now while still having enough structure to hold well over the next few years.

Production
The grapes come from vineyards in the provinces of Lecce and Brindisi, where iron-rich slate soils and the hot Puglian climate favour expressive, sun-ripened reds. The estate farms much of its land manually and largely organically, with many old bush vines, some nearly 50 years old, helping preserve concentration and regional character. After harvest, the wine is vinified in a way that highlights freshness and drinkability before spending 6 months in oak for added complexity and texture.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile red for roasted meats, grilled sausages, pasta with tomato-based sauces, and aged cheeses. Serve it slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 20–30 minutes can help the aromas open up nicely.

Producer
La Pruina began in the early 1980s when Pietro d’Apolito planted olive trees and vines on what would become a growing family estate in Salento. In 2012, the next generation launched the La Pruina label, turning years of fruit-growing into a focused wine project. Today the winery is sold in more than 20 countries and is regularly recognised for wines that combine Puglian authenticity with elegance and easy drinking appeal.
