Description
La Pruina Primitivo di Manduria 2024 is a generous, characterful red from southern Puglia, offering ripe fruit, warm spice and an easy-drinking elegance that makes it immediately appealing. Produced by a family estate with roots dating back to the early 1980s, it reflects the region’s long tradition of sun-drenched, authentic wines made for both flavour and finesse.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, inviting ruby color with youthful intensity. The nose is packed with ripe red fruit, cocoa, and gingerbread-like spice, with a subtle warmth that hints at the grape’s southern origins.
On the palate, the wine is plush and full-bodied, with juicy layers of dark cherry and plum framed by gentle oak spice and a soft, structured finish. The six months of barrel aging add shape without taking away the wine’s friendly, approachable style, and while it is ready to enjoy now, it should hold well for a few more years.
Production
La Pruina’s vineyards in and around Manduria are cultivated largely by hand and mostly organically, with old vines—some nearly 50 years old—planted on iron-rich, slate-like soils that suit the warm climate of Puglia. Much of the fruit comes from bush-trained vines, a traditional and highly effective method in this sun-soaked part of southern Italy. After harvest, the wine is vinified to preserve ripeness and varietal character, then matured for six months in oak to add texture and a touch of structure.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent partner for grilled meats, roasted lamb, rich pasta dishes, and classic Italian fare such as lasagna or aubergine parmigiana. It also works beautifully with mature cheeses and herb-driven dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting for 20–30 minutes can help open up the aromas and soften the wine’s youthful edge.
Producer
La Pruina was founded in 2012 by the next generation of the d’Apolito family, building on a story that began in the early 1980s when Pietro d’Apolito first planted olives and vines near Salento. With the support of his wife Marianna, the family gradually expanded its vineyard holdings before turning to winemaking under its own label. Today, La Pruina is sold in more than 20 countries and has earned regular recognition for producing authentic Puglia wines with impressive depth, balance, and drinkability.
