La Mouline E. Guigal Côte Rotie, 1994

La Mouline is one of E. Guigal’s legendary “La La” Côte-Rôtie wines, produced from an exceptional single vineyard in the Côte Blonde. The 1994 vintage offers the rare opportunity to experience a mature expression of Syrah co-fermented with a small proportion of Viognier—an iconic style that helped establish Côte-Rôtie among the world’s great red wine appellations.

Tasting Notes
Now at a mature stage, this deep ruby-red wine may show garnet and brick highlights at the rim. Its aromatic profile is expected to be complex and evolved, combining dark berries, plum and black cherry with violets, smoked meat, pepper, leather, forest floor and subtle earthy notes. The Viognier contributes lift and floral perfume, while bottle age brings savoury, tertiary nuances.

Production
La Mouline comes from a steep, south-facing site in the Côte Blonde, where poor, rocky soils and excellent exposure encourage concentrated yet refined fruit. The Syrah is traditionally co-fermented with Viognier and harvested by hand at low yields. Following a long extraction, the wine is matured for an extended period in oak, allowing its powerful structure and aromatic complexity to integrate with time.

Food & Serving
Its mature, savoury character makes it an excellent match for roasted or braised lamb, beef fillet, venison and game birds, as well as dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles or Mediterranean herbs. Serve lightly cool at approximately 16–18°C. Carefully decant shortly before serving to remove any sediment and to open the wine, while tasting first to ensure that its mature aromas remain fresh and expressive.
