Description
La Mission Haut-Brion 2009 is one of Bordeaux’s great modern classics: a Grand Cru Classé from Graves that combines depth, precision, and remarkable longevity. Produced by one of the most revered names in the region, it captures the power of a warm, generous vintage while retaining the finesse and smoky complexity that define the estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep garnet core with a polished, almost opaque intensity at the center and evolving ruby highlights at the rim. The nose is layered and expressive, with blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and the signature earthy, slightly smoky note that often marks La Mission Haut-Brion.
On the palate, it is broad, concentrated, and beautifully structured, with ripe dark fruit wrapped around fine tannins and a mineral, savory backbone. As it develops, notes of cocoa, spice, loam, and toasted oak add complexity, leading to a long, refined finish. This is a wine built for aging and should continue to evolve gracefully for decades under proper cellar conditions.
Production
La Mission Haut-Brion comes from the gravelly soils of Graves, where excellent drainage and warmth help Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot achieve full ripeness with balance. The 2009 vintage benefited from favorable growing conditions, allowing for careful harvesting at optimal maturity. Vinification follows a meticulous, estate-driven approach focused on preserving purity, structure, and aromatic detail, with élevage in oak contributing polish and depth.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, or dishes with truffle and forest mushroom accents. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young or after extended cellar rest to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.
Producer
La Mission Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s historic benchmark estates, long admired for producing wines of exceptional character, elegance, and aging capacity. Located in the Graves appellation, it has played an important role in establishing the reputation of the region’s fine wines. Over the years, the estate has earned a place among the most respected names in Bordeaux for its consistency, depth, and distinguished style.
