Description
La Mission Haut-Brion 2005 is a benchmark Graves red from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, offering the depth, polish, and longevity collectors look for in a great Left Bank wine. Crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, it combines power with finesse in a style that has made the château legendary for generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 vintage typically shows a deep garnet core with only slight development at the rim. The nose is layered and complex, with classic notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, and dried herbs, unfolding with hints of earth, cigar box, and subtle spice as it breathes.
On the palate, it is structured and concentrated, with firm yet refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, persistent finish. The fruit remains richly textured, balanced by savory mineral and earthy tones that give the wine real gravitas. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, and in a strong vintage like 2005, it can continue to develop beautifully for many years to come.
Production
La Mission Haut-Brion is situated on a gravel-rich terroir in Pessac-Léognan, where well-drained soils and a temperate Atlantic-influenced climate help produce wines of both intensity and elegance. The estate is known for careful vineyard management and selective harvesting, with grapes picked at optimal ripeness and vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the character of each component. Traditional Bordeaux methods, combined with meticulous élevage in French oak, shape the wine’s precision, structure, and aromatic complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game, and slow-cooked dishes with earthy accompaniments such as mushrooms or truffle. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for at least one to two hours is recommended, especially if the bottle is being enjoyed in its youth, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
La Mission Haut-Brion is one of Bordeaux’s historic great estates, with roots going back centuries and a long-standing reputation for producing some of the most distinctive wines in Graves. Alongside its famous neighbor Haut-Brion, it holds a key place in the region’s winemaking history and remains a reference point for top-tier Pessac-Léognan.
