Description
La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2021 is one of Bordeaux’s most coveted dry white wines, crafted in tiny quantities and prized for its precision and depth. In 2021 it shows a particularly racy, chiselled character, standing apart from its sibling Haut-Brion Blanc with a tighter, more vertical profile. This is a grand, ageworthy white that marries crystalline fruit with the distinctive mineral stamp of Pessac-Léognan’s gravel soils.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2021 is pale straw with green highlights, youthful and luminous, hinting at its freshness and energy. The bouquet is refined yet expressive, opening with ripe pear and white grapefruit, followed by notes of fresh‑baked bread, crushed wet stones, and a delicate floral lift. Subtle hints of citrus zest and faint smoke emerge with air, underlining its complexity.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a silky, satin-like entry that quickly tightens into a focused, firmly structured mid-palate. The core is driven by vivid citrus and stone fruit wrapped in a chalky, almost saline mineral texture, giving a compact, linear and slightly more austere profile compared with the broader, more enveloping Haut-Brion Blanc. The acidity is crisp and persistent, stretching the finish and promising excellent evolution in bottle. While already impressive, this 2021 is clearly built for aging, and should develop further layers of honeyed complexity, nutty nuances and waxy richness over 10–20 years and beyond, depending on cellar conditions.
Production
La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc comes from the gravelly terraces of Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, where deep layers of pebbles mixed with sand and clay sit atop well-drained subsoils. This terroir, combined with the maritime climate, produces white grapes of great aromatic intensity and natural freshness. The blend is typically dominated by Sémillon with a significant proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and selection berry by berry. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The wine then ages on fine lees, with bâtonnage as appropriate, to enhance mouthfeel and depth while preserving the tension and minerality that define the 2021 vintage.
Food & Serving
La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2021 is a superb partner for refined seafood and poultry dishes: think turbot or sole with beurre blanc, scallops with citrus and fennel, lobster, or roast chicken with morels and a light cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with veal, fine charcuterie, and aged hard cheeses, as well as delicately seasoned Asian cuisine where citrus and ginger play a role. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to balance aromatics and structure. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes helps the wine unfold its layers; as it gains bottle age, decanting for up to an hour can further enhance its complexity and aromatic breadth.
Producer
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the great names of Bordeaux and a near-neighbour of the legendary Château Haut-Brion in Pessac-Léognan. With roots dating back to the 16th century and a long history under religious ownership, La Mission has built a reputation for producing some of the most profound reds and, in far smaller quantities, truly exceptional dry whites. Now under the stewardship of Domaine Clarence Dillon, the estate is a benchmark for the Graves/Pessac-Léognan region, consistently earning top critical acclaim. La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is among the rarest and most sought-after white wines in Bordeaux, often compared in stature to the very greatest white Burgundies for its longevity, depth and remarkable expression of terroir.
