Description
La Gaffelière 2021 is a refined and surprisingly generous expression of a classic Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé in a cooler, more delicate Bordeaux vintage. Brimming with red-fruited charm yet underpinned by serious structure, it combines immediate appeal with the poise to age gracefully. This historic Right Bank estate, with roots dating back to Roman times and a long-standing place in Bordeaux’s elite classification, delivers a wine that bridges tradition and modern precision.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, La Gaffelière 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby colour with garnet hues at the rim, signaling both freshness and concentration. The nose is expressive and pure, opening with ripe cherries and crushed raspberries, followed by notes of licorice, graphite and pencil shavings, all wrapped in a subtle layer of creamy, well-integrated new oak.
On the palate, it sits in the medium to full-bodied range for the vintage, with a velvety, seamless texture and a polished tannin profile. Juicy red berry fruit is lifted by lively acidity, giving the wine a mouthwatering, energetic feel, while hints of sweet spice, cocoa and a mineral edge from the limestone underpin the core. The finish is long, succulent and sapid, suggesting excellent balance. While already approachable in its youth after a short aeration, it has the structure and freshness to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time.
Production
La Gaffelière lies on the famed slopes just south of the village of Saint-Émilion, where limestone-rich soils and clay-limestone terraces provide ideal conditions for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate benefits from excellent natural drainage and optimal exposure, producing grapes with both ripeness and vibrant acidity. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel, typically by hand, with careful sorting to ensure only healthy, optimally ripe fruit makes it into the winery—especially crucial in a cooler, more challenging vintage like 2021. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, often with a gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a portion new) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that reflects both its limestone terroir and the thoughtful, detail-driven approach of the estate.
Food & Serving
This 2021 La Gaffelière pairs beautifully with refined yet flavourful dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, veal chops, duck breast, or classic French fare such as entrecôte with shallot jus. It also complements mushroom dishes, truffled poultry and aged hard cheeses, where its acidity and fine tannins cut through richness. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its elegance and aromatic detail. Young bottles will benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to allow the bouquet to open and the structure to soften; as the wine matures, a gentler splash-decant just before serving is sufficient.
Producer
Château La Gaffelière is one of Saint-Émilion’s most historic properties, owned by the Malet-Roquefort family for centuries, with documented roots on this site stretching back to the Gallo-Roman era. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, the estate occupies some of the appellation’s most coveted limestone slopes, alongside such illustrious neighbors as Château Ausone. In recent decades, La Gaffelière has undergone significant investment in the vineyard and cellar, elevating quality and precision while maintaining a classic Right Bank identity built on Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its wines are widely regarded for their combination of elegance, terroir transparency and ageworthiness, cementing the château’s status as a benchmark in the region.
