La Gaffelière 1982 is a superb mature Saint-Émilion from one of the appellation’s most respected historic estates. As a 1er Grand Cru Classé B, it combines the depth and finesse that have made Bordeaux’s Right Bank so sought after, especially in a great vintage like 1982.

Tasting Notes
With nearly four decades of bottle age, this wine typically shows a garnet to brick-red hue with softened edges. The bouquet can be beautifully evolved, offering aromas of dried black cherry, plum compote, cedar, tobacco, leather, truffle, and earthy spice. On the palate, it should feel silky and layered rather than powerful, with mature tannins, gentle acidity, and lingering notes of dried fruit, forest floor, and sweet spice. In a strong bottle, the finish can remain remarkably long and elegant. Its drinking window is now very mature, and well-stored bottles may still offer pleasure, though they should be enjoyed soon.

Production
La Gaffelière’s vineyards lie on the limestone and clay soils of Saint-Émilion, a terroir that is especially well suited to producing structured, ageworthy wines with refinement. In 1982, harvesting would have been done by hand, with careful selection of fully ripe fruit, followed by traditional Bordeaux vinification methods designed to preserve balance, texture, and complexity.

This wine pairs beautifully with classic dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, game birds, mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting gently for about 30 to 60 minutes if the bottle shows no signs of excessive fragility.
