Description

Kunjas Pagadebit 2020 is a characterful red wine from the Adriatic island of Korčula, crafted mainly from the native Plavac Mali grape. Locally, this unique cuvée is known as “Pagadebit” – the island’s sole red wine and a closely guarded specialty. Produced only in outstanding vintages and in very limited quantities, it has earned the nickname “the secret gold of the island.” What sets Pagadebit apart is its blend of approximately 90% Plavac Mali and 10% Shiraz, bringing together indigenous power and an elegant, spicy lift. The name Pagadebit dates back to the era of Venetian rule, when local farmers, forced to pay tribute, chose to keep their prized white wines and sent the red grapes instead. Today, Vinarija Kunjas honors that history by bottling this wine exclusively in the best years, a practice that saw production paused for four vintages when quality wasn’t up to their exacting standards.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kunjas Pagadebit 2020 typically shows a deep ruby core with garnet reflections, retaining an impressive brightness and saturation even with some bottle age. The color is one of its signatures, standing apart from many of the more rustic Plavac wines of the region by staying vivid and lively over time. On the nose, expect generous aromas of ripe black cherry, wild Dalmatian herbs, plum, and dried fig, layered with hints of black pepper, warm spice, and a touch of Mediterranean garrigue. The Shiraz component can lend a subtle note of dark berries and a faint smokiness. The palate is full-bodied yet surprisingly poised, with the sun-drenched intensity of Plavac Mali balanced by fresh acidity and firm, ripe tannins. Flavors of blackberry, sour cherry, and dried Mediterranean herbs unfold alongside cocoa and a saline, maritime edge that reflects the island terroir. With proper cellaring, Pagadebit from a strong vintage like 2020 should evolve gracefully for 7–10 years from harvest, gaining more complexity in its savory and tertiary notes while softening its structure.

Production
Kunjas Pagadebit hails from selected vineyard sites on the island of Korčula, where Plavac Mali thrives on stony, sun-exposed slopes overlooking the Adriatic. The soils are typically poor and well-drained, often a mix of limestone and rocky clay, which naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to allow strict selection of perfectly ripe bunches, an essential step given the decision to produce Pagadebit only in exceptional years. In the cellar, the Plavac Mali and a smaller share of Shiraz are vinified with careful temperature control to preserve fruit purity, followed by a period of maturation – often in a combination of stainless steel and older oak – to integrate tannins and develop complexity without overwhelming the wine’s island character. The result is a structured yet refined expression of Korčula’s red potential.

Food & Serving
Kunjas Pagadebit 2020 is a natural match for hearty Mediterranean cuisine: think grilled lamb with rosemary, slow-braised beef or veal, octopus stew, and rich tomato-based dishes featuring olives and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and charcuterie, where its tannin and acidity cut through fat and salt. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and savory notes. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s aromatic layers to fully open.

Producer
Vinarija Kunjas is a small, quality-focused producer on Korčula, dedicated to showcasing the island’s distinctive coastal terroir through traditional varieties like Plavac Mali. In a region better known for its whites, Kunjas has carved out a special niche by crafting Pagadebit as the island’s emblematic red – and producing it only when nature delivers an exceptional vintage. This commitment to selectivity, which included pausing production for several years when the harvest did not meet their standards, has earned the winery a reputation among insiders for integrity and excellence. Today, Vinarija Kunjas stands as one of the key ambassadors for Korčula’s red wines, proving that this sun-bathed island can produce reds of real character, depth, and aging potential.
