Description
Krug Vintage 2008 is already being spoken of as one of the house’s great classics – a razor‑sharp, tightly coiled Champagne with immense aging potential. Crafted only in truly exceptional years, this vintage captures the cool, luminous character of 2008 in Champagne with remarkable precision and depth. For collectors and Champagne lovers alike, it’s a bottle that showcases Krug’s signature richness wrapped in an almost electric freshness.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Krug 2008 shows a bright, pale gold hue with a fine, persistent mousse that hints at its concentration and energy. The nose is intensely pure and focused: vibrant yellow citrus (lemon zest, grapefruit and yuzu), crushed wet stones, green and golden apple, and delicate white flowers, layered with notes of toasted almonds, fresh brioche, and a subtle chalky minerality.
On the palate, the wine is strikingly linear and precise, with an almost blade‑like acidity that gives it incredible tension and length. Crisp citrus, green pear and orchard fruit unfold alongside nuances of hazelnut, almond cream, pastry and a touch of salinity, all carried by a mouth‑watering, chalk‑driven finish that seems to go on endlessly. Still youthful and tightly knit, this is a Krug built for the long haul; it will easily evolve and gain complexity over the next 15–30 years and beyond in a good cellar.
Production
Sourced from carefully selected parcels across some of Champagne’s finest terroirs, Krug Vintage 2008 reflects the house’s philosophy of blending diverse vineyards and crus to express a single, distinctive year. The cool, classical 2008 growing season produced grapes of exceptional freshness, concentration and natural acidity. Grapes are hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness, parcel by parcel, and fermented in small, old oak casks – a hallmark of Krug – which brings texture, subtle spice and complexity without overt oak flavor. After the creation of the final blend, based primarily on Pinot Noir with Chardonnay and Meunier, the wine is bottled for a long secondary fermentation and extended aging on the lees in the chalk cellars of Champagne, before a carefully judged dosage and further rest prior to release.
Food & Serving
Krug Vintage 2008 is a brilliant match for refined dishes that can stand up to its intensity and structure: think turbot with beurre blanc, langoustines, scallops with citrus butter, lobster, or sushi and sashimi of the highest quality. It also pairs beautifully with roast poultry, veal in cream sauces, aged Comté or Parmigiano‑Reggiano, and delicate truffle dishes. Serve well chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the layers of aroma and flavor to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into larger-bowled Champagne glasses and giving it a little time in the glass will help reveal its full complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1843 in Reims, Krug is widely regarded as one of Champagne’s greatest houses, renowned for its uncompromising pursuit of quality and its distinctive, complex style. The domaine has long championed the art of meticulous parcel selection and separate vinification, allowing each plot to express its individual character before being woven into a harmonious whole. Within Champagne, Krug occupies a singular place, celebrated for both its multi‑vintage Grande Cuvée and its highly sought‑after vintages and single‑parcel bottlings. Decade after decade, Krug’s wines receive some of the highest critical acclaim in the region, and the 2008 vintage is already considered one of the most significant releases in the house’s modern history.
