Description
Krug Limited Edition 2003 is a rare collector’s release that brings together three bottles of Krug Vintage 2003 and three bottles of Krug Grande Cuvée based on the 2003 harvest, presented in an elegant wooden case. It captures two of Champagne’s most iconic expressions from one exceptional year, offering both the singular character of a vintage wine and the timeless artistry of Krug’s multi-vintage style. For Champagne lovers, it is a striking reminder of Krug’s long-standing pursuit of depth, harmony, and individuality.
Tasting Notes
Krug Vintage 2003 is known for its generous, deeply layered profile, with fine mousse and a luminous golden color that hints at maturity and richness. Expect aromas of ripe orchard fruit, citrus peel, dried fruits, toasted brioche, spice, and subtle nutty complexity, all shaped by long aging in Krug’s cellars.
On the palate, the wine is broad and expressive, with a creamy texture balanced by fresh acidity and a precise, mineral-driven finish. The vintage’s warmth gives it extra ripeness and volume, while Krug’s extended aging adds nuance and depth. Both the Vintage and the 2003-base Grande Cuvée have excellent aging potential, and in this format they will continue to evolve beautifully over time.
Production
Krug sources grapes from carefully selected Champagne terroirs, blending Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier to build complexity, structure, and freshness. The 2003 vintage was shaped by a notably warm year, and Krug’s meticulous selection of the most expressive wines from the harvest allowed the house to preserve balance and tension despite the conditions. After fermentation and blending, the wines spend well over a decade maturing in Krug’s cellars before release, ensuring remarkable depth and refinement.
Food & Serving
This collection is ideal with refined dishes such as lobster, turbot, scallops, truffle risotto, roast poultry, or aged Comté and Parmesan. Krug Vintage 2003 can also handle richer preparations, including game birds and creamy sauces, while the Grande Cuvée pairs beautifully with a wider range of elegant canapés and seafood. Serve chilled at around 9–11°C; decanting is generally not necessary, though opening the bottle a little before serving can help the aromas unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1843, Champagne Krug is one of the most prestigious names in Champagne and is renowned for its uncompromising standards and distinctive house style. Joseph Krug’s original vision was to create the best possible Champagne every year, regardless of vintage variation, and that philosophy still defines the estate today. Krug is widely respected for its depth, complexity, and exceptional cellar aging, making it a benchmark producer for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
