Description
Krug 2002 Magnum is a remarkable vintage Champagne that captures the personality of one exceptional harvest with signature Krug depth, precision, and elegance. Presented in magnum and gift box, it offers not only immediate luxury but also the promise of even greater complexity with age, making it a highly coveted bottle for collectors and special occasions. As with all Krug vintage wines, it reflects the house’s long tradition of crafting Champagnes that are defined by character, not convention.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a brilliant golden color with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with ripe peach and pear, then softer nuances of honey, almond, and nougat. On the palate, it is intense yet beautifully structured, with generous fruit balanced by mineral tension and a discreet, lingering acidity that keeps everything in harmony.
The finish is long, refined, and contemplative, leaving a lasting impression of depth and finesse. This is a Champagne with excellent aging potential, and while it already shows impressive complexity, it can continue to evolve gracefully for many years to come.
Production
Krug 2002 is built from a careful selection of parcels across Champagne, with a final blend that typically brings together around 50% Pinot Noir from sites in the southern Montagne de Reims—such as Aÿ, Mareuil, Bouzy, and Ambonnay—alongside roughly 25% Pinot Meunier for freshness and 20% Chardonnay for lift and delicacy. The result is a wine shaped by terroir, precision selection, and a focus on expressing the distinctive DNA of the vintage rather than a fixed house formula. Krug’s tasting committee plays a central role in choosing the wines that are most expressive and compelling from the year.
Food & Serving
This is a Champagne best enjoyed with refined dishes such as lobster, scallops, roasted turbot, truffle risotto, or elegant poultry preparations, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to fully open. Decanting is not usually necessary, but for a magnum of this caliber, a brief aeration in the glass can help reveal even more of its complexity.
