Description
Konni & Evi Alte Terrassen 2022 is a characterful German white wine that shines a light on old terraced vineyards in the cool northern region of Saale‑Unstrut. Crafted from Gutedel (Chasselas) and Silvaner, it offers a finely etched, mineral-driven profile that’s both quietly understated and deeply expressive. This is a bottle for those who appreciate precision, freshness and a strong sense of place in their glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Alte Terrassen 2022 presents a pale straw to light lemon hue with a subtle greenish glint, reflecting its cool-climate origins and youthful vitality. The nose opens with delicate orchard fruit—crisp apple and pear—alongside white peach, citrus zest and gentle floral notes (white blossom, chamomile), wrapped in a clearly defined stony minerality. Hints of freshly cut herbs and a faint nuttiness add complexity as the wine opens in the glass.
On the palate, this is dry, taut and finely textured, with a light to medium body and vibrant acidity that gives the wine lift and clarity. Flavours of green apple, pear skin and lime are layered with crushed stone, saline nuances and a subtle savory edge typical of both Gutedel and Silvaner from cooler sites. The finish is clean, persistent and mouthwatering, leaving a chalky, mineral impression rather than overt fruit sweetness. Enjoy it now for its energy and precision, or over the next 3–5 years as the texture fleshes out and the mineral and nutty tones deepen further.
Production
Alte Terrassen is sourced from old terraced vineyard parcels in Saale‑Unstrut, a historic but relatively cool wine region in eastern Germany where limestone, sandstone and loess soils combine to give a distinct, mineral style. The terraces provide excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure, helping Gutedel and Silvaner achieve ripeness while preserving brisk acidity. Konni & Evi work with a minimal‑intervention mindset, typically harvesting by hand to select only healthy, fully ripe grapes from these demanding slopes. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with native yeasts, often in stainless steel or neutral vessels to avoid masking the delicate aromatics. The wine is then left on its fine lees for added texture and complexity, with low intervention and minimal additions to preserve purity, terroir and a precise, crystalline profile.
Food & Serving
This crisp, mineral white is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with freshwater fish, ceviche, sushi and simply prepared shellfish, as well as light poultry dishes, asparagus, seasonal salads, and soft, mild cheeses like fresh goat’s cheese or young bloomy rinds. It also works very well with vegetable‑driven cuisine, from grilled zucchini and fennel to herb‑laden dishes and delicate pasta with spring vegetables. Serve well‑chilled but not ice cold, ideally around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics to unfold. Decanting is not essential, but pouring it into a larger glass and giving it a few minutes in the glass can help reveal additional layers of fruit, herb and minerality.
Producer
Konni & Evi is a small, quality‑driven producer from Saale‑Unstrut, one of Germany’s northernmost and historically significant wine regions, where viticulture dates back to the Middle Ages. Working largely by hand and with a strong focus on authenticity and low‑intervention methods, they have become part of a new wave of growers putting this lesser‑known area back on the map for discerning wine drinkers. Their wines place terroir and drinkability at the forefront, often highlighting traditional varieties like Gutedel and Silvaner from distinctive sites such as old terraces. Through careful vineyard work and thoughtful, pared‑back winemaking, Konni & Evi have earned a reputation among enthusiasts for producing precise, honest, and quietly distinctive wines that speak clearly of their origins.
