Kongsgaard Syrah 2019

Kongsgaard Syrah 2019 is a benchmark Napa Valley Syrah from John and Alex Kongsgaard, widely regarded as one of California’s most compelling expressions of the grape. Sourced from the Kongsgaard parcel on the celebrated Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, it combines power, precision, and unmistakable sense of place in a wine that has earned top praise from leading critics.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it pours almost black, hinting at the concentration within. The nose is deeply layered and intense, with blackcurrant, blackberry, blood orange, black pepper, smoked meat, liquorice, tar, and dark earth all unfolding in waves. The palate echoes the aromatic profile, led by rich dark fruit and savory smoked-meat character, then lifted by dried Provençal herbs and a long, persistent finish. It is spectacular now, but has the depth and structure to age beautifully for at least 20 years, likely gaining even more complexity over time.

Production
The grapes come from Kongsgaard’s own parcel at Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, a cool-climate site within Napa Valley known for producing Syrah with both ripeness and freshness. Kongsgaard has worked this parcel for around 20 years, and the results continue to improve as the vines mature and the vineyard expression becomes even more refined.

Food & Serving
This is a Syrah built for richly flavored dishes such as grilled lamb, slow-braised short ribs, game, pepper-crusted beef, or roasted mushrooms. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the aromatics and structure fully open.
