Description
Kongsgaard Hudson Syrah 2022 is a dense, powerful expression of Californian Syrah from one of Napa Valley’s most revered artisan producers. Sourced from the famed Hudson Vineyard in Carneros, this wine marries bold fruit with savory complexity and impeccable polish. In a warm, low-yielding vintage, Kongsgaard has crafted a Syrah that is both generous and supremely refined, capturing the full character of site and season.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Hudson Syrah is nearly opaque, with a deep purple core and a dark ruby rim that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is intensely layered, opening with black cherry and ripe plum, followed by waves of mocha, dark chocolate, new leather, and black licorice. Subtle notes of incense, smoke, and warm spice add a brooding, almost Mediterranean complexity.
On the palate, the wine is large-scaled and outgoing, yet beautifully composed. Dense black fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and damson plum—are wrapped in velvety tannins that have been softened and rounded by the warmth of the vintage. Espresso, cocoa, and savory earth tones mingle with hints of smoked meat and graphite. Despite its power, there are no harsh edges; the texture is plush, the acidity well-judged, and the finish long, dark, and finely tapered. This Syrah is impressive now for its opulence and charm, but it will gain further nuance and complexity with 8–15 years of careful cellaring.
Production
Hudson Vineyard, set in the cool, wind-swept Carneros subregion of Napa, combines marine influence from the San Pablo Bay with well-drained volcanic and clay-loam soils, giving Syrah both ripeness and aromatic lift. The fruit for Kongsgaard’s Hudson Syrah is typically harvested by hand in small lots at optimal physiological ripeness, ensuring concentrated flavors and perfectly mature tannins. In the cellar, Kongsgaard is known for a minimalist but exacting approach: gentle fermentation, often with a portion of whole clusters to build structure and spice, followed by élevage in high-quality French oak barrels. Extended aging on the lees and careful, low-intervention handling result in a Syrah of great depth, polish, and site transparency.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Syrah that shines alongside richly flavored dishes. Think slow-braised short ribs, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, duck breast with black cherry reduction, or venison with a cocoa-inflected jus. It also pairs beautifully with hearty mushroom ragù, truffled polenta, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the bouquet to unfurl and the tannins to relax; older bottles will need a shorter, more gentle decant to avoid disturbing sediment.
Producer
Kongsgaard is a cult Napa Valley estate founded by John Kongsgaard, long considered one of the region’s most visionary winemakers. Working in small volumes with an uncompromising, artisanal philosophy, Kongsgaard champions low-intervention methods and meticulous vineyard work to produce wines of intensity, individuality, and profound site expression. The Hudson Syrah has become one of California’s benchmark cool-climate Syrahs, illustrating the estate’s talent for combining Old World structure and savor with New World purity of fruit. Over the years, Kongsgaard wines have earned consistently high critical acclaim and a devoted following among collectors seeking some of the most characterful and age-worthy bottlings in Napa.
