Description

Klaus Peter Keller’s 2009 Neumond Riesling is the inaugural wine from the red-soil section of the legendary Abtserde vineyard in Westhofen. Produced from a young parcel planted in 2006, it offers a distinctive expression of Riesling shaped by iron-rich earth, exposed limestone and the exceptional late-season conditions of the 2009 vintage—a rare first chapter in the history of this rediscovered site.

Tasting Notes
Golden in colour, the wine opens with expressive aromas of passion fruit, pineapple and wild herbs, followed by subtle notes of tobacco, mint and iron-rich earth. On the palate, it combines the silkiness and aristocratic poise associated with Abtserde with remarkable tension, cool mineral energy and a distinctly stony grip. The red soil lends the wine a slightly rustic, savoury character, while the rocky site provides freshness and structure beneath the ripe fruit. With air, Neumond becomes increasingly complex, revealing more of its vineyard character and less primary fruit. It was built to develop for around 15 years, and its mature evolution is expected to emphasise mineral, earthy and savoury nuances. Stored well, this is a compelling bottle for those who appreciate aged, terroir-driven Riesling.

Production
Neumond comes from a special, iron-oxide-rich section of Abtserde, where the normally pale limestone gives way to striking red, extremely rocky soil. The parcel had lain uncultivated for roughly 20 years before Klaus Peter Keller replanted it in 2006 with Riesling selected through massale selection. The vines grow slowly in the stony ground and the vineyard is permanently covered with naturally occurring vegetation rather than a conventional seeded cover crop, allowing the site’s diverse wild herbs to contribute to its character. The outstanding 2009 vintage brought a warm, expressive growing season followed by a cold October and early November, helping the grapes retain grip, freshness and mineral definition.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Its ripe fruit, savoury mineral character and vibrant acidity make it an excellent match for roasted poultry, freshwater fish, shellfish, pork with herbs, or Asian dishes with ginger and aromatic spices. It can also be enjoyed with mature hard cheeses. Give the wine plenty of air before serving; decanting is recommended, particularly when opening it young, and it can continue to unfold over several days in an open bottle.

Producer
Klaus Peter Keller and his wife Julia have become leading figures in Rheinhessen, bringing international attention to the region’s great limestone vineyards through precise, site-driven Rieslings. Abtserde is among Keller’s most celebrated Westhofen sites, and Neumond represents the first wine made from its distinctive red-soil section. The painstaking restoration of this long-abandoned parcel reflects Keller’s belief in the unique personality of individual vineyard sites and marks an important milestone in the estate’s history.
