Description
Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay 2023 is one of the estate’s defining wines, offering a distilled expression of the house style in a single glass. It brings together Sonoma Coast freshness, Burgundy-inspired winemaking, and the precision that has made Kistler one of California’s most respected Chardonnay producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, polished profile with a subtle depth and a finely calibrated richness. The nose opens with lemon oil, toasted hazelnut, white peach, and a touch of brioche, flint, and saline minerality.
The palate is concentrated yet refined, balancing ripe citrus and stone fruit with a vibrant spine of acidity and a supple, creamy texture. Oak is present but seamlessly integrated, adding structure rather than weight. The finish is long, cool, and lifted, with citrus zest and a chalky, mineral edge. This is a Chardonnay with excellent aging potential, likely to gain even more nuance over the next several years.
Production
Les Noisetiers is blended from fruit sourced from three of Kistler’s own vineyards in western Sonoma, mainly in the fog-influenced area between Sebastopol and Occidental. The vines are planted with Kistler’s heritage Chardonnay clone and farmed for low yields and strong terroir expression. Fermentation is spontaneous in French oak barrels, followed by bâtonnage and malolactic conversion, with élevage of up to a year in mostly new and one-year-old barrels.
Food & Serving
This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with roast chicken, lobster, seared scallops, butter-poached fish, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve it slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider a brief decant if drinking young to allow the wine’s layers to unfold.
Producer
Kistler Vineyards was founded in California and has built a long-standing reputation for producing some of the state’s most distinguished Chardonnay. Known for its focus on site expression, low yields, and meticulous vineyard work, Kistler has become a benchmark producer in Sonoma County and beyond. The estate is widely admired for combining French-inspired winemaking with unmistakable California character.
