Production
The Kirchspiel vineyard forms a natural amphitheater rising to about 150 meters, opening toward the southeast and the Rhine. This exposure ensures early morning sun, moderated daytime warmth and protection from cold winds—ideal conditions for slowly ripening Riesling with great aromatic complexity. The old vines, some around 30 years of age, are rooted deep in a mix of clay marl (Tonmergel) and limestone, which lends the wine its tightly knit minerality and fine, salty edge. At Weingut K.F. Groebe, harvesting is done selectively by hand to ensure only fully ripe, healthy grapes make it into the Großes Gewächs cuvée. In the cellar, Friedrich Groebe works with restrained, traditional methods: gentle pressing, cool and controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak—followed by extended lees contact to build texture and complexity without masking the purity of the site. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of Kirchspiel’s terroir rather than of winemaking artifice.
