Description
K.F. Groebe Riesling Kirchspiel Großes Gewächs 2024 is a dry, single-vineyard Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most coveted sites, Westhofener Kirchspiel. Crafted as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS, it represents the top tier of Groebe’s production, combining precision, power and longevity. This wine captures the cool limestone character of Kirchspiel, a site with a long reputation for producing some of Germany’s most refined dry Rieslings.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Kirchspiel GG shows a pale to medium lemon color with a youthful, crystalline brightness. The nose is tightly woven at first, then opens with classic Rheinhessen Riesling aromas: lime zest, white peach, green apple and crisp pear, layered with wet stone, chalk dust, delicate white flowers and a hint of herbal spice.
On the palate, it is bone-dry, taut and finely chiseled, with juicy citrus and stone-fruit flavors supported by a firm spine of acidity. Notes of lime, nectarine and crunchy green apple give way to saline, smoky mineral tones and a subtle, savory herb nuance on the long, focused finish. Still very young, this 2024 Kirchspiel Großes Gewächs is built for development and should unfold beautifully over 8–15 years, gaining in depth, texture and complexity with bottle age.
Production
The fruit for this wine comes exclusively from the Kirchspiel vineyard in Westhofen, a renowned south- to southeast-facing slope characterized by limestone-rich marl, clay and loess soils that provide excellent drainage and a distinctive, salty-mineral profile. Vines here benefit from early-morning sun and cooling breezes, which help preserve acidity and extend the ripening period. Grapes are typically hand-harvested in small batches to ensure optimal selection and gentle handling. After pressing, fermentation is usually carried out with natural yeasts in stainless steel and/or large traditional oak barrels, at controlled temperatures to retain purity of fruit. The wine is then left on fine lees for an extended period to build texture and complexity before bottling as a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS.
Food & Serving
This Kirchspiel GG is an excellent partner for refined, subtly prepared dishes: think ceviche or tartare of sea bass, grilled turbot, steamed shellfish, sushi and sashimi, or fine poultry with citrus and herb accents. It also pairs beautifully with lightly spiced Asian cuisine, vegetable terrines, and soft or semi-hard cheeses such as young goat cheese or Comté. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and aromatic lift. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the wine open up and reveal more of its layered minerality and depth.
