Description
K.F. Groebe Riesling Kirchspiel Grande Reserve 2017 Versteigerungswein is a rare, auction-only white wine from one of Rheinhessen’s most revered sites in Westhofen. Crafted in tiny quantities and released late, it represents the pinnacle of dry-style Rheinhessen Riesling, built for complexity, longevity, and true collectors. The challenging yet ultimately outstanding 2017 vintage, with frost, hail, intense summer heat and late heavy rain, has yielded a wine of remarkable tension, depth, and ageworthiness. This Grande Reserve is distinguished by its extended maturation and precise, mineral-driven style that captures the essence of the Kirchspiel vineyard. As a Versteigerungswein, it is offered exclusively through the prestigious VDP auction system, underscoring its rarity and prestige. It also pays homage to the golden age of German Riesling around 1900, when these wines were among the most sought-after whites on the world’s great tables, while interpreting that heritage through a modern, meticulously dry and terroir-focused lens.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Kirchspiel Grande Reserve shows a luminous, pale to medium lemon color with green reflections, hinting at its youth and vibrant acidity despite its maturity in bottle. The nose is refined yet intense, opening slowly with notes of lime zest, white peach, and crisp green apple, followed by layers of grapefruit, lemon oil, and delicate white flowers. With air, more nuanced aromas unfold: crushed slate, wet limestone, herbal hints of lemon balm, and a subtle, noble smokiness.
On the palate, the wine is taut, focused, and deeply mineral, with a precise, linear acidity that gives great tension and drive. Citrus and stone fruit flavors—lime, Meyer lemon, underripe nectarine—are wrapped around a dense, saline core that clearly reflects its limestone-rich origin. The texture is both firm and creamy from extended aging, with a long, resonant finish marked by citrus pith, crushed rock, and a gentle, almost savory grip. Still at the beginning of its evolution, this 2017 has significant aging potential: it will continue to gain complexity and tertiary notes (honey, wax, dried herbs, and smoke) over the next 10–20 years and beyond, for those patient enough to cellar it.
Production
The Riesling grapes for Kirchspiel Grande Reserve come from the famed Kirchspiel vineyard in Westhofen, a steep, east- to southeast-facing site with limestone and marl soils that are renowned for producing intensely mineral, long-lived wines. The cool morning exposure and reflective, limestone-heavy subsoils allow for slow, even ripening, preserving acidity while developing aromatic depth. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe, healthy berries are selected for this top cuvée. In the cellar, Groebe employs a minimalist, traditional approach: gentle pressing, slow fermentation—often with indigenous yeasts—in large neutral vessels or traditional German casks, and extended aging on the fine lees to build texture and complexity. The "Grande Reserve" designation implies longer maturation before release, resulting in a wine of greater depth, harmony, and age readiness at the time it reaches the market.
Food & Serving
This structured, dry Kirchspiel Riesling pairs beautifully with refined, subtly rich cuisine that can stand up to its acidity and minerality. Think poached or roasted turbot, sole, or halibut, scallops with beurre blanc, sashimi-grade tuna, or fine sushi and sashimi. It is equally compelling with classic German dishes such as veal in light cream sauces, poultry with morels, or pork tenderloin, and it shines alongside aromatic yet not overly spicy Asian dishes—such as ginger-scented steamed fish or lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese preparations. Serve at around 9–11°C (48–52°F) to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves without sacrificing freshness. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially in the first years after release, to let the wine unfold its full spectrum of citrus, stone fruit, and mineral notes.
