Description
K.F. Groebe Riesling Aulerde Großes Gewächs 2023 is a finely crafted dry Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most esteemed grand cru vineyards, Westhofener Aulerde. This is a serious, terroir-driven wine that turns the power of a warm site into grace, clarity and precision in the glass. As a VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® from a historic family estate, it represents the pinnacle of dry Riesling in Germany’s largest wine-growing region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Aulerde shines a bright, pale lemon-yellow with glints of green, hinting at both youth and tension. The nose is expressive yet refined, opening with ripe summer fruit: red-fleshed peach, mirabelle plum and juicy melon, interwoven with fresh gooseberry and redcurrant. Subtle floral notes and a quiet, stony minerality emerge with air, giving the bouquet both charm and depth.
On the palate, this is precise and energetic, driven by a vibrant, finely etched acidity that carries the fruit in a long, dancing line across the tongue. The flavors mirror the nose—ripe stone fruit, mirabelle, melon and currant—wrapped around a salty, mineral core that clearly speaks of loess, clay and gravelly subsoils. The gentle élevage in large wooden casks adds a touch of creaminess and poise without masking the clarity of the fruit, lending polish and elegance to the wine’s structure. Still very youthful, the 2023 Aulerde GG has excellent aging potential; over the next 8–15 years it will gain further complexity, with more pronounced herbal and smoky-mineral nuances developing over time.
Production
The Westhofener Aulerde is one of Rheinhessen’s classic top sites, a former river terrace formed when the ancient Rhine once flowed where the village of Westhofen now lies. Here, the vines grow on sun-exposed slopes and a high plateau of loess and loam, underpinned by layers of gravelly and clayey sands that are rich in minerals and excellent at storing warmth. This combination gives Riesling both ripeness and a distinctive, finely salty minerality. At Weingut K.F. Groebe, the grapes for this Großes Gewächs are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure only perfectly ripe and healthy fruit is selected from the old vines. After gentle pressing, fermentation and maturation take place in traditional wooden casks, allowing the wine to develop texture and complexity while preserving its pure, site-driven character. The extended fine-lees contact contributes to the wine’s finesse, structure and ageworthiness without adding overt oak flavor.
Food & Serving
This dry, structured Riesling is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with refined dishes that benefit from both freshness and depth. Think lightly poached or grilled fish with citrus beurre blanc, scallops, sushi and sashimi, or fine vegetable cuisine such as asparagus, fennel or artichokes with herb-infused sauces. It also complements roast poultry, veal in delicate cream sauces, and mildly spiced Asian dishes—especially those with ginger, lemongrass or light chili heat. Serve at 9–11°C to showcase its precision and aromatic complexity. In its youth, a short decant of 30–60 minutes helps the wine open and reveal its full spectrum of fruit and mineral notes; with a few years of bottle age, a gentle splash-decant shortly before serving is sufficient.
