Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Aulerde Großes Gewächs shows a bright, pale to medium lemon color with a subtle green hue, hinting at its youth and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive and layered, offering a panoply of fully ripe yellow fruits: apricot, mirabelle plum, and baked quince, interwoven with a touch of exotic fruit and candied lemon peel. Behind the fruit lies a fine, sweet-scented spice and a cool, stony minerality that gives the bouquet both lift and complexity. On the palate, the wine is dry, concentrated and finely structured, with a precise, linear acidity that carries the richness of the fruit. Juicy stone fruits are joined by hints of citrus oil, herbal nuances and a gentle, savory spice from the long élevage in large oak casks. Production
The Aulerde vineyard in Westhofen sits on former slopes of the ancient Rhine river, today forming an exposed plateau with excellent sun exposure and airflow. Here, Groebe farms old Riesling vines—now over 60 years of age—that drive their roots deep into loess-loam soils underlain by green clay. This distinctive subsoil is rich in minerals and moisture-retentive, giving the wines both power and a marked, earthy-mineral character. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to preserve aromatics and natural acidity, then gently pressed. Fermentation and maturation take place in traditional large wooden casks (Stück or Doppelstück), where the wine rests on fine lees, gaining additional texture, refinement and depth without overt oak flavor. The result is a classically styled Großes Gewächs that reflects its origin with clarity and precision.

This dry, powerful Riesling is a versatile partner at the table and shines with refined cuisine. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted or poached turbot, grilled sea bass, or scallops with citrus and fennel, as well as poultry in light cream sauces, veal schnitzel, or pork tenderloin with root vegetables. It also complements aromatic cuisines—think veal or poultry with morel mushrooms, or subtly spiced Asian dishes like steamed fish with ginger and spring onion. Serve at 9–11°C (about 48–52°F) in a medium-sized white wine or Riesling glass to allow the aromas to unfurl.
