Description
K.F. Groebe Riesling Aulerde Großes Gewächs 2020 is a powerful, dry Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s most prized vineyard sites in Westhofen. Classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and bottled as Großes Gewächs, it represents the pinnacle of terroir‑driven German Riesling. This cuvée combines meticulous craftsmanship with a unique geological heritage, capturing both the depth and finesse that have made Westhofen a reference point for serious Riesling lovers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Riesling shines a bright, pale straw with green reflections, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is expressive and layered: notes of red‑fleshed peach, ripe mirabelle plum and white currant mingle with aromas of yellow melon, citrus zest and a precise, cool minerality. Subtle floral hints and a touch of herbal spice complete the aromatic profile.
On the palate, the wine is dry, focused and tightly structured, with a vibrant acidity that gives energy and length. Stone‑fruit flavors are joined by juicy citrus, crisp apple and a saline, almost smoky mineral core that clearly speaks of Aulerde’s loess and sandy subsoils. The élevage in large wooden casks brings extra texture, polish and grace without masking the fruit, lending the wine a poised, elegant frame. The finish is long, finely etched and persistent, with the interplay of acid and minerality lingering on the tongue. While already impressive in its youth, this 2020 has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining even more complexity and tertiary nuances.
Production
The grapes for this Großes Gewächs come from the Westhofener Aulerde, a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® whose gently sloping former riverbanks and elevated plateau once bordered the prehistoric Rhine. Here, loess‑loam topsoils sit over layers of gravelly and clayey sands, providing excellent drainage and a rich mineral supply that is clearly reflected in the wine’s precision and salt‑tinged structure. The vines are tended with great care, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy Riesling berries are selected. In the cellar, Groebe works in a traditionally minimalist way: gentle pressing, slow fermentation and maturation in wooden casks allow the wine to develop depth, clarity and elegance, letting the Aulerde site speak without excess intervention.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined cuisine. Try it with shellfish and crustaceans such as scallops, langoustines or lobster, as well as grilled or poached white fish, sushi and sashimi. It also works wonderfully with poultry in light cream sauces, veal, and delicately spiced Asian dishes, as well as vegetable‑based plates like asparagus, fennel or risotto with herbs. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and minerality. A brief decant of 30–60 minutes in its youth can help the aromas unfurl; as the wine matures, decanting becomes optional but can still bring extra expressiveness.
