Description
Karl May Riesling Geyersberg Bio 2022 is a beautifully crafted organic Riesling from one of Rheinhessen’s rising star estates. Sourced from the esteemed Geyersberg vineyard, this wine combines precision, freshness and depth in a distinctly modern, terroir-driven style. It’s a characterful dry Riesling that showcases just how vibrant and refined Rheinhessen has become in recent years.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Geyersberg Riesling shines a bright, pale lemon with green reflections, hinting at its youthful energy. The nose is expressive and clean, offering notes of lime, green apple and white peach, layered with citrus blossom, wet stone and a touch of herbal spice. There’s a distinct mineral edge that immediately signals its single-vineyard origin.
On the palate, this is racy and focused, with crisp acidity driving flavors of citrus, green pear and stone fruit, wrapped around a saline, slate-like minerality. The wine is dry, precise and finely textured, with a long, lingering finish that balances fruit, spice and stony nuances. Enjoyable now for its vibrancy and purity, it also has the structure and acidity to develop additional complexity over the next 3–6 years in bottle, gaining more honeyed and smoky tones with time.
Production
The Riesling Geyersberg Bio 2022 comes from the Geyersberg site in Rheinhessen, a slope known for its favorable exposure, good drainage and mineral-rich soils that give the wines their tension and clarity. Farmed organically, the vineyards are managed with a focus on soil health, biodiversity and low intervention, ensuring the grapes express their origin as purely as possible. Harvest is typically done by hand, allowing careful selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, Karl May works with gentle pressing, cool, controlled fermentation and a thoughtful use of stainless steel (and in some cases larger old barrels) to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity, while allowing the wine to rest on fine lees for extra texture and complexity before bottling.
Food & Serving
This organic Rheinhessen Riesling is a versatile partner at the table. Its bright acidity and mineral backbone make it ideal with seafood such as oysters, ceviche, sushi, grilled prawns or simply prepared white fish. It also pairs beautifully with light poultry dishes, fresh goat’s cheese, Vietnamese or Thai cuisine with citrus and herbs, and vegetable-focused plates like asparagus, green salads or lightly spiced Asian-inspired dishes. Serve well chilled at around 8–10 °C. A short aeration in the glass is usually sufficient, but a brief 15–20 minute decant in a small carafe can help open up its aromatics, especially in the first couple of years after release.
