Description

Karl May Osthofen Grauburgunder Bio 2023 is an expressive organic white wine from Rheinhessen, crafted from up to 40-year-old Pinot Gris vines in the renowned Osthofener Goldberg and Bechtheimer Geyersberg sites. Fermented and aged in wood with extended time on fine lees, it offers both depth and precision, bridging classic German elegance with a more Burgundian sense of richness. This cuvée captures the evolving reputation of Rheinhessen as a source of characterful, terroir-driven white wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Grauburgunder shows a shimmering red‑gold hue, hinting at its concentration and gentle wood influence. The nose opens with a fine, layered fruit profile of rhubarb, ripe apricot and quince, supported by subtler tones of vanilla, nut pastry, dried straw and hay. It’s aromatic without being overtly tropical, leaning instead towards refined, cool‑climate fruit and savory nuances. On the palate, the wine is full and mouth‑coating, with plenty of texture and volume. The ripe stone‑fruit character is carried by a creamy lees-derived richness, while the subtle wood notes add complexity rather than dominate. A distinct mineral line and a salty edge drive the wine through to a long, persistent finish, keeping it lively and food‑friendly. Enjoyable now for its generous fruit and charm, it also has the structure and acidity to develop further complexity over the next 3–5 years.

Production
The grapes for Karl May Osthofen Grauburgunder Bio 2023 come from some of Osthofen and Bechtheim’s best south‑ and south‑west‑facing slopes, notably the Goldberg and Geyersberg vineyards, where up to 40‑year‑old vines dig deep into the soils to deliver concentrated, site‑specific fruit. Certified organic, the vineyards are farmed with a focus on soil health and biodiversity, and the fully ripe grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection. In the cellar, the must is fermented in wooden casks, then left on the fine lees for around six months, gaining texture, complexity and subtle oxidative notes, before further maturation in wood to harmonize fruit, oak and minerality.

Food & Serving
This Grauburgunder is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with roast poultry, veal, pork tenderloin, or herb‑crusted fish. Its texture and gentle oak also make it an excellent match for richer dishes such as creamy risottos, mushroom pastas, nutty Alpine cheeses or quiche. Serve at 10–12°C to balance freshness and aromatics. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium‑sized carafe helps the wine open up its layers of fruit, spice and mineral notes.
