Tasting Notes
In the glass, Kaapzicht Steytler Vision 2021 shows a deep, opaque ruby core with a vibrant garnet rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe blackcurrant and black cherry from the Cabernet, plummy forest fruits from the Merlot, and a dark, spicy, almost smoky note from the Pinotage. Subtle aromas of cedar, cigar box, graphite, violets and baking spices reveal quality oak integration and careful élevage. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet finely balanced, with a core of dark berry fruit, blackcurrant, mulberry and ripe plum framed by firm, ripe tannins. The Pinotage component adds a touch of wild berry, savoury spice and a faint charred note, while the Bordeaux varieties contribute structure, elegance and length. Well-judged acidity keeps the richness in check and extends the finish, which lingers with notes of cocoa, tobacco leaf and sweet spice. While already approachable with some air, the 2021 has the concentration and structure to develop beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and tertiary character.

Production
The grapes for Steytler Vision 2021 are sourced from Kaapzicht’s dryland bush vines and trellised parcels on the rolling granite slopes of the Bottelary Hills in South Africa’s Coastal Region. This area benefits from cooling maritime influences from False Bay, combined with decomposed granite soils that naturally limit yields and enhance concentration and minerality. Harvesting is typically done by hand, ensuring careful selection of bunches and optimal ripeness for each variety. In the cellar, the components are vinified separately: destemmed, then fermented in stainless steel or open-top fermenters with regular pump-overs or punch-downs to extract colour, flavour and fine tannins. The wine is then matured in quality French oak barriques (a portion new) for an extended period, allowing the different varieties to harmonise before final blending and bottling.

Kaapzicht Steytler Vision 2021 is a natural partner for rich, savoury dishes such as rosemary-crusted lamb rack, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison stews, or chargrilled ribeye with peppercorn sauce. It also works beautifully with hearty dishes like oxtail, mushroom ragù, aged hard cheeses, and South African favourites such as boerewors or grilled game. Serve at 16–18°C to showcase the wine’s aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to allow the tannins to soften and the complex bouquet to fully open.
