Description
Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2020 is a beautifully ethereal expression of one of Burgundy’s most coveted premier cru vineyards. Silky, perfumed and finely etched, it captures the sensual, almost weightless charm that has made Les Amoureuses legendary among Pinot Noir lovers. This 2020 release stands out in the Drouhin lineup for its energy, precision and intensely floral character.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a shimmering, translucent ruby hue, delicate yet vibrant. The nose is wonderfully seductive, opening with bright notes of wild raspberries and crushed strawberries, followed by bergamot, warm baking spices, rose petals and a hint of peony. Subtle undertones of chalky minerality and fine tea leaves add complexity as the wine opens in the glass.
On the palate, it is medium to medium-plus in body, but carried by an impression of weightless grace. The texture is silken, with ultra-fine tannins and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that lifts the red fruit and floral notes. Layers of raspberry, red cherry and blood orange mingle with spice, a touch of cedar and a long, intensely perfumed finish that seems to linger endlessly. While already captivating in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over 10–15+ years, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity with careful cellaring.
Production
Les Amoureuses is a famed premier cru parcel in Chambolle-Musigny, rooted in limestone-rich, stony soils that naturally limit yields and accentuate finesse and perfume. The climate here, with its well-drained slopes and optimal exposure, produces Pinot Noir of remarkable delicacy and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only perfect clusters are used. Vinification at Joseph Drouhin is guided by a philosophy of elegance and transparency of terroir: gentle extraction, a high proportion of whole berries or partial whole-cluster fermentation depending on vintage conditions, indigenous yeasts and a restrained use of oak. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to refine the tannins and add subtle spice without overpowering the wine’s floral charm.
Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is best paired with refined, delicately flavoured dishes that echo its finesse rather than overwhelm it. Consider roast pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin with morels, duck breast with cherry glaze, or simple, perfectly cooked lamb chops. It also shines with truffled dishes, wild mushroom risottos, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté or aged Gruyère. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its perfume and elegance. Young bottles will benefit from 45–60 minutes in a decanter to allow the aromatics to blossom, while older, cellared vintages should be handled more gently with a brief, careful decant to remove sediment.
Producer
Maison Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and based in Beaune, is one of Burgundy’s most respected family-owned domaines, with vineyards spanning many of the region’s most prized appellations. Over generations, the Drouhin family has built a reputation for wines that privilege finesse, purity and a clear expression of terroir, rather than sheer power. They were early adopters of sustainable and organic practices in Burgundy, with many of their own vineyards farmed biodynamically. Their holdings and long-term grower relationships in the Côte de Nuits give them exceptional access to top sites such as Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses, and their meticulous approach in the cellar has earned them consistent critical acclaim and a loyal following among Burgundy collectors worldwide.
