Description

Joseph Drouhin Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 is a poised and finely structured red Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered climats. Sourced from the legendary Bonnes-Mares vineyard, straddling Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, this Grand Cru marries power with finesse in classic Côte de Nuits style. The full use of whole clusters in 2020 gives the wine an added dimension of aromatic complexity and age‑worthy structure, promising a long, graceful evolution in bottle.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Bonnes-Mares shows a deep, shimmering ruby hue with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is initially restrained but very pure, gradually revealing layers of wild blueberries, blackcurrants and ripe red berries, interwoven with floral notes, subtle stem‑derived spice, and a touch of forest floor as it opens. Those whole clusters are beautifully integrated, lending lift and nuance rather than greenness. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet tightly coiled, with vivid red and blue fruit at the core—think crushed raspberries, red cherries and blackberries—framed by fine, chalk‑tinted tannins and a vibrant line of acidity. There’s a subtle, appealing textural grip on entry that carries through to a long, mineral-laced finish. While already harmonious, the wine is clearly built for the long haul: expect it to start showing its best personality from around 7–10 years after the vintage, with an aging potential of 20 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
This Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru comes from a storied terroir of limestone and clay with pockets of marl, giving wines that combine structure, depth and an almost tactile minerality. The vines, planted on well‑draining slopes benefiting from ideal Burgundy exposures, are carefully tended with low yields to intensify concentration. Harvesting is done by hand to ensure pristine fruit selection directly in the vineyard. In 2020, Joseph Drouhin opted for 100% whole‑cluster fermentation, allowing the stems to contribute aromatic lift, complexity and refined tannins. The grapes are gently vinified with a focus on elegance—long, controlled macerations and minimal intervention—before aging in French oak barrels (a proportion new) to add subtle spice and texture without overshadowing the finesse of the Grand Cru fruit.

Food & Serving
This refined yet structured Grand Cru is a natural match for richly flavored but elegant dishes: think roast duck breast with cherry jus, pigeon or squab, venison with red wine reduction, or a classic beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with truffled poultry, wild mushroom risotto and aged Burgundian cheeses like Epoisses or Comté. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. For young bottles, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to help the tightly wound fruit and whole‑cluster nuances unfold; mature bottles should be handled more gently, with a brief, careful decant if needed to remove sediment.

Producer
Founded in 1880, Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy’s benchmark family domaines, renowned for its commitment to finesse, terroir expression and sustainable viticulture. Based in Beaune, the estate has built an enviable reputation across both Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, with holdings in some of the region’s most illustrious vineyards, including several Grands Crus. Drouhin was an early adopter of organic and biodynamic practices at scale in Burgundy, underscoring its belief that great Pinot Noir is born from living soils and meticulous vineyard work. Today, the family is in its fourth generation at the helm, and wines like Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru stand as flagship examples of the domaine’s elegant, age‑worthy style and its prominent role in shaping modern Burgundy on the international stage.
