Description

The Josef Milz Neumagener Engelgrube Riesling Auslese 1921 is an exceptionally rare German sweet wine from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, offering a remarkable glimpse into more than a century of wine history. Made from carefully selected Riesling grapes, this 0.7-litre bottle is a distinctive collector’s item as well as a potentially memorable tasting experience for lovers of mature German wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. The nose is intensely perfumed, with mature peach and apricot aromas complemented by honeyed notes and a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is rich and sweet, with a lively balance between sweetness and acidity that keeps the wine focused. The finish is long and graceful, leaving a gentle mineral impression. As a wine from 1921, its condition and drinking profile will depend greatly on provenance, storage and the individual bottle. It is best approached as a historic rarity; while mature, well-preserved examples may still offer great pleasure, further ageing potential cannot be guaranteed.

Production
The wine comes from the Neumagener Engelgrube vineyard in the Mosel, a region known for steep, mineral-rich sites and Riesling with pronounced freshness. As an Auslese, it was made from specially selected, fully ripe grapes, traditionally harvested later in the season to achieve greater concentration and sweetness. Specific details concerning the 1921 harvest, vinification and maturation are not available, so the wine should be appreciated primarily for its age, origin and rarity.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C, allowing the wine time to open in the glass. Its sweetness and acidity make it a natural partner for desserts such as cheesecake, crème brûlée and fruit tarts, while its mature character may also suit blue cheese or be enjoyed on its own. Decanting is not generally necessary for such an old wine; instead, open it carefully and pour gently, or use a fine filter if sediment is present.

Producer
Josef Milz is a VDP-affiliated German wine producer associated with the Mosel, one of the country’s historic Riesling regions. The VDP designation reflects membership in Germany’s established quality-wine association, while the Neumagener Engelgrube represents the estate’s connection to a respected Mosel vineyard site. With its 1921 vintage, this bottle stands as a particularly rare historical example of traditional German Riesling production.
