Description
A remarkable piece of Mosel wine history, the 1959 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling feine Auslese Goldkapsel comes from one of Germany’s most celebrated vineyard sites. Made from carefully selected, highly concentrated grapes and distinguished by its Goldkapsel designation, this rare 0.7-litre bottle offers collectors and lovers of mature Riesling the chance to experience an exceptional historic vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep golden hue, reflecting its considerable age and concentration. Its bouquet is rich and expressive, with aromas of ripe peach, apricot, honey and developing tertiary notes, complemented by the subtle mineral character associated with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and complex, balancing luscious sweetness with refreshing acidity. Layers of mature stone fruit and honey lead into a long, elegant finish with a distinctive mineral edge. This is a fully mature Riesling, and its future enjoyment will depend greatly on bottle condition and storage history; well-preserved examples may continue to develop gracefully, although this bottle is best approached as a mature collector’s wine.
Production
The wine originates from the steep, slate-rich slopes of Wehlener Sonnenuhr, a renowned Mosel site known for producing intensely aromatic Rieslings with vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality. As a feine Auslese, it was made from individually selected, very ripe grapes with elevated sugar and flavour concentration. The Goldkapsel indicates an especially distinguished selection within the estate’s hierarchy. Traditional Mosel vinification and extended bottle maturation have allowed the wine’s fruit, sweetness, acidity and mineral character to develop remarkable complexity over the decades.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C, allowing a little time in the glass for its mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural match for fruit-based desserts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée and foie gras, while its sweetness and acidity also complement blue cheese and other richly flavoured cheeses. Decanting is not always necessary for an old Riesling; carefully standing the bottle upright before opening and pouring gently is generally preferable. If the wine appears reduced or closed, a short, delicate decant may help, but prolonged aeration should be avoided.
Producer
Joh. Jos. Prüm is one of the most respected names in the Mosel, with the family’s winemaking tradition deeply rooted in the region and the estate established in its modern form in the early twentieth century. The producer is particularly renowned for Rieslings from prestigious steep-slope vineyards, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where slate soils, cool conditions and natural acidity create wines of exceptional longevity. Its finely balanced sweet Rieslings are regarded as benchmarks of classic Mosel style, making this 1959 Goldkapsel bottling a significant addition to a serious collection.
