Description
Joh. Bapt. Schäfer Riesling Pittermännchen Großes Gewächs 2019 is a benchmark dry Riesling from one of the Nahe’s most exciting small estates. Crafted from the steep, classified Pittermännchen vineyard, this wine captures the precision, depth and mineral intensity that define Germany’s top “GG” (Großes Gewächs) bottlings. In the glass, it shows how Sebastian Schäfer has firmly established himself in the top league of Riesling producers, even in more demanding vintages.
Tasting Notes
In appearance, the 2019 Pittermännchen GG is bright and pale straw with green reflections, hinting at both youth and tension. The nose opens with subtle maturity and refinement: delicate floral notes, hints of herbal tea, yellow apple and stone fruit, layered with acacia honey and a fine smoky, slate-driven minerality.
On the palate, the wine is tightly wound yet already strikingly detailed. It shows a salty, stony core, with dense, concentrated fruit—think ripe citrus, yellow apple and a touch of quince—balanced by laser-like acidity. The texture is compact and focused, suggesting that the wine is currently in a more closed phase, a normal stage in the evolution of great Rieslings. With air, it fans out into impressive complexity and length, revealing more layers of spice, herbs and mineral depth. This 2019 has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it should unfold beautifully over 10–15 years or more, gaining further nuance and harmony.
Production
The Riesling for this Großes Gewächs comes from the famed Pittermännchen vineyard in the Nahe, a steep, terraced site known for its weathered slate and quartzite soils that give the wine its pronounced mineral character. The cool climate and excellent drainage allow for slow, even ripening, concentrating flavor while preserving vibrant acidity. Grapes are harvested by hand in multiple passes to select only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. In the cellar, Sebastian Schäfer works with a gentle, minimalist approach: careful pressing, slow, temperature-controlled fermentation—often in stainless steel and/or traditional large wooden casks—and extended time on the fine lees to build texture and complexity without masking the pure expression of site. The result is a dry Riesling of finesse, density and precision.
Food & Serving
This Riesling Großes Gewächs is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine. Its salty minerality and firm structure make it ideal with high-quality seafood such as turbot, halibut, scallops, lobster or sashimi-grade fish, as well as classic German pairings like trout with almonds. It also shines with poultry in light, creamy sauces, veal, or subtly spiced Asian dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass and white soy. Serve chilled but not too cold, around 9–11°C, to allow the aromatics to open. In its youth and especially in this more closed phase, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to help the wine reveal its full complexity and length.
