Description

Joaquin Piante a Lapio 2018 is a characterful, single-site expression of Fiano from the hills of Campania, crafted by the boutique estate Joaquin Aziende Agricole. This is not a simple Italian white, but a serious, ageworthy wine that combines volcanic tension with layered complexity. Sourced from vineyards around the historic village of Lapio—one of the most prized zones for Fiano—it showcases the grape’s noble side with remarkable depth and finesse.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Piante a Lapio presents a luminous straw to deep lemon color, often with golden highlights reflecting its concentration and time in bottle. The nose is intense yet refined: ripe citrus and orchard fruit (lemon oil, tangerine, yellow plum) weave with notes of wild herbs, chamomile, almond, beeswax, and a faint smokiness that hints at its volcanic origins. On the palate, this Fiano is full-bodied and textural, with a striking balance between richness and vibrant acidity. Flavors of preserved lemon, pear, apricot and bergamot are layered with nuances of toasted hazelnut, honey, fennel, and a subtle saline, mineral edge. The finish is long and precise, with a slight phenolic grip and a lingering impression of citrus peel and herbs. 2018 is approachable now, but the structure and acidity suggest strong aging potential: expect it to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more nutty, honeyed and tertiary complexity while retaining its core of freshness.

Production
The fruit for Joaquin Piante a Lapio 2018 comes from high-altitude vineyards around Lapio in Campania, an area famed for its Fiano thanks to its cool nights, steep slopes, and mineral-rich, often volcanic or calcareous soils. These conditions slow ripening and intensify aromatics, while preserving acidity. Yields are typically kept low, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it to the cellar. In line with Joaquin’s philosophy of minimal intervention, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented with careful temperature control—often with extended lees contact to build texture and complexity. Aging may include time in neutral oak or large casks and/or stainless steel, allowing the wine to develop depth and a layered mouthfeel without overt wood influence, preserving the purity of the Fiano and its terroir.

Food & Serving
Joaquin Piante a Lapio 2018 is a versatile gastronomic white that shines at the table. It pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, grilled octopus, butter-poached lobster, or shellfish risotto, as well as with roast poultry, rabbit, veal scaloppine, and truffle-inflected dishes. Its herbal and mineral tones also make it a great partner for aged Pecorino, semi-hard cheeses, and dishes featuring fennel, mushrooms or roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both its aromatics and texture. A short decant of 20–30 minutes in a medium-sized white wine decanter can help the wine open up and reveal its more intricate layers.

Producer
Joaquin Aziende Agricole is a small, quality-driven estate in Campania that has quickly built a reputation for some of the region’s most distinctive and ageworthy wines. Founded with the goal of redefining the image of southern Italian varieties, Joaquin focuses on meticulous vineyard work, low yields, and artisanal, terroir-focused vinification. Working primarily with native grapes such as Fiano and Aglianico in some of Irpinia’s most prized zones, the estate has become a reference point for consumers seeking serious, cellar-worthy wines from Campania. Their cuvées, including Piante a Lapio, are known for depth, tension, and longevity, and are increasingly recognized by sommeliers and enthusiasts for showing just how world-class Campanian whites and reds can be.
