Description
Jean Rijckaert’s Saint-Véran Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a rich yet vibrant Chardonnay from the Mâconnais, combining concentration with a refreshing mineral character. Made by one of the region’s most meticulous independent producers, it reflects Rijckaert’s distinctive approach: expressive Burgundy terroir, carefully handled fruit and élevage in wood. The “Vieilles Vignes” designation highlights the wine’s depth and complexity.
Tasting Notes
The wine presents a bright, pale golden colour. On the nose, it offers an inviting blend of ripe orchard fruit, citrus and subtle floral notes, complemented by delicate hints of oak and a stony, mineral freshness. The palate is generous and concentrated, with flavours of pear, yellow apple and citrus balanced by lively acidity. A fine mineral line keeps the wine focused and fresh, while the finish is long, poised and quietly complex.
Although enjoyable in its youth, the 2023 vintage has the structure and concentration to develop further in bottle over the next few years. With time, the fruit should become more integrated and the mineral and gently nutty nuances more pronounced.
Production
This Chardonnay comes from the Saint-Véran appellation in the Mâconnais, an area known for white Burgundy with both richness and freshness. Jean Rijckaert and his team handle the fruit with great precision from harvest through bottling, although specific harvesting details for this cuvée are not provided. Following the house style, the wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in wooden barrels and is then aged for approximately ten months, allowing the texture and subtle oak character to develop without obscuring its mineral identity.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its balance of richness and acidity makes it an excellent partner for roast or grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, creamy fish dishes, shellfish, scallops and risotto. It also works beautifully with Comté or other mature, moderately firm cheeses. Decanting is not essential when serving the wine young, but 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open its aromas, particularly after a few years of bottle age.
Producer
Jean Rijckaert, a passionate Belgian winemaker, began making wine in the Mâconnais in 1990 and founded Domaine Rijckaert in 1998. He established holdings in both southern Burgundy and Jura, with separate cellars in Davayé and Villette-lès-Arbois so that the wines can be made close to their vineyards. Since meeting Florent Rouve in 2013, Rijckaert has gradually passed the baton to the younger winemaker. The two share a philosophy centred on precision, restrained intervention and fermentation in wood followed by around ten months of élevage. The domaine is also known for processing selected purchased grapes entirely in-house, from harvest to bottling.
