Description
Jean Rijckaert’s Pouilly-Fuissé La Roche Vieilles Vignes 2023 is an expressive and refined Chardonnay from one of southern Burgundy’s most respected appellations. Defined by its pronounced mineral character, delicate texture and concentration from old vines, it offers an elegant interpretation of the limestone-rich terroirs of the Mâconnais.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright, pale golden colour. On the nose, it is precise and inviting, with delicate aromas of citrus, white flowers and ripe orchard fruit supported by subtle flinty and mineral nuances.
On the palate, the wine is fresh and graceful, combining fine fruit with a distinct stony character and a silky, well-balanced texture. Its restrained elegance and mineral drive make it enjoyable in its youth, while the concentration of the old vines should allow it to develop additional complexity over the next 4–7 years when properly stored.
Production
The wine comes from old Chardonnay vines in the La Roche sector of Pouilly-Fuissé, where limestone-rich soils help give the wine its characteristic freshness and mineral expression. Jean Rijckaert and his team work with great precision from harvest through bottling, with the Mâconnais wines produced at their cellar in Davayé. Specific harvesting and vinification details for the 2023 cuvée are not provided, but the domaine’s philosophy places strong emphasis on careful vineyard work and allowing the character of each terroir to remain clear in the finished wine.
Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. This Pouilly-Fuissé is a natural match for grilled or roasted fish, shellfish, oysters, seafood risotto and poultry in a light cream sauce; its mineral freshness also complements goat’s cheese and delicate vegetable dishes. Decanting is not essential, although 20–30 minutes of gentle aeration in a carafe can help reveal more of its aromatic detail when served young.
Producer
Jean Rijckaert, a passionate Belgian winemaker, began working in the Mâconnais in 1990 and founded Domaine Rijckaert in 1998. After falling in love with the potential of both Burgundy’s southern vineyards and the Jura, he established holdings in Mâconnais and Arbois, with separate cellars in Davayé and Villette-lès-Arbois to keep production close to the vineyards. In 2013, Rijckaert met Florent Rouve, who gradually began taking over the domaine. Their shared commitment to precision, terroir expression and meticulous work from harvest to bottling continues to shape the estate’s distinctive wines.
