Description
Jean-Michel Gaunoux Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 2023 is a refined Chardonnay from one of Meursault’s most celebrated premier cru sites, offering a precise balance of intensity, elegance, and mineral drive. Crafted with a light hand and a strong focus on terroir expression, it captures the classic Burgundian ideal of power without excess, making it a wine to enjoy now or cellar with confidence.
Tasting Notes
Pale golden in the glass, the wine opens with an expressive bouquet of white flowers, jasmine, citrus, and white peach, all framed by a distinct stony, chalk-edged minerality. There is a cool, lifted freshness to the aromatics that gives the wine immediate clarity and sophistication.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fine structure, vivid acidity, and a textured, almost saline mineral core. The oak remains discreet, adding subtle finesse rather than weight, while the finish is long, focused, and intensely mineral. This is a wine with excellent aging potential, likely to gain extra depth and nuance over the next several years.
Production
The grapes come from a small mid-slope parcel in Les Perrières, one of Meursault’s top vineyards, planted in the early 1980s. The site’s stony soils and balanced exposure contribute to the wine’s tension, precision, and distinctly mineral character.
Harvested by hand and farmed according to sustainable principles, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfiltered and without fining. It is matured for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with around 25 to 30 percent new oak, then rested in stainless steel to preserve freshness and structural clarity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as lobster, scallops, or roasted turbot, as well as poultry in cream sauce, fine risottos, or lightly truffled dishes. Serve at 10–12°C to showcase both its freshness and texture, and consider brief decanting if opening young to help the aromatics unfold.
