Jean-Luc Colombo, Syrah Cornas Terres Brûlées 2020

Jean-Luc Colombo’s Syrah Cornas Terres Brûlées 2020 is a striking Northern Rhône red that captures the power and finesse of Cornas in one glass. Sourced from one of the appellation’s most respected family estates, it showcases pure Syrah character with depth, freshness, and a distinctly mineral edge rooted in the region’s steep granite terraces. Cornas has long been admired as one of the Rhône Valley’s most characterful Syrah appellations, and this cuvée is a compelling modern expression of that heritage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is deeply coloured and concentrated, with the kind of dark, intense hue you would expect from a serious Cornas. The nose opens with black fruit, graphite, violet, pepper, and a subtle smoky note, gradually revealing more complexity with air. The palate is full-bodied and layered, balancing ripe dark berries, savoury spice, and firm but polished tannins. There is real structure here, yet the wine remains elegant and fresh rather than heavy. With its concentrated fruit and sturdy frame, it has excellent aging potential and should continue to develop beautifully over the next decade or more.

Production
The grapes come from Cornas’s steep, granite-rich terraces, where the sun exposure and hot growing conditions give the appellation its historic meaning of “burnt earth.” Because the vineyards are so difficult to access, harvesting is done entirely by hand. After vinification, the wine matures for around 21 months, mainly in used oak barrels, allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront while adding subtle texture and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a natural match for roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, game, braised beef, or rich dishes with herbs and peppery seasoning. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses and hearty mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least an hour to let the wine open up and show its full aromatic depth.
