Description

Jean Gagnerot Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge 2023 is a vibrant, cool-climate Burgundy that captures the freshness and purity of Pinot Noir from the hills above the famed Côte de Nuits. This is a refined yet approachable red, offering classic Burgundian character at a more accessible price point. It’s the kind of bottle that delivers a genuine sense of place while remaining wonderfully easy to enjoy now.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a bright, translucent ruby hue typical of young Pinot Noir from the Hautes Côtes. The nose opens with lifted red cherry, wild strawberry, and cranberry, backed by hints of violet, rose petal, and a subtle touch of forest floor and spice. On the palate, it is fresh and medium-bodied, with crunchy red fruits, fine-boned tannins, and a lively acidity that gives the wine real energy and length. Notes of redcurrant, pomegranate, and a faint hint of white pepper and dried herbs emerge with air, framed by discreet oak (if any) and a clean, mineral finish. 2023 is a vintage that can be enjoyed in its youth for its juicy, primary fruit, but it will reward short-term cellaring of 3–5 years, gaining a little more complexity and silkiness with time.

Production
Sourced from vineyards in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, this wine draws on higher-altitude parcels with cooler nights and well-drained limestone-clay soils—conditions that naturally favor aromatic finesse and fresh acidity in Pinot Noir. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity and allow for careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification often involves gentle destemming (with potentially a proportion of whole clusters depending on the style), followed by a cool maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation to extract delicate color, fragrance, and fine tannins rather than power. Maturation takes place in stainless steel and/or used French oak barrels to maintain purity of fruit and highlight the terroir of the Hautes Côtes.

Food & Serving
This Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge is a natural partner for classic Burgundian fare such as roast chicken, coq au vin, or duck breast with cherry or berry sauces. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, mushroom dishes, grilled salmon or tuna, and semi-soft cheeses like Brie, Reblochon, or Tomme. Serve slightly cool, at about 14–16°C (57–61°F), to emphasize its freshness and aromatic lift. A brief 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up, especially in its first few years, but extended decanting is not necessary.

Producer
Jean Gagnerot is an historic Burgundy name, known for crafting wines that respect the character of each appellation while remaining faithful to traditional Burgundian craftsmanship. With roots in the region dating back decades, the house has built a reputation for sourcing fruit from well-situated vineyards and working closely with growers to express the nuances of terroir. Their Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits bottling reflects a commitment to quality in so-called “lesser-known” appellations, giving wine lovers access to authentic Burgundy at a more approachable level. Through careful vineyard selection and classic, restrained winemaking, Jean Gagnerot continues to play a quiet but appreciated role in showcasing the diversity and charm of Burgundy’s cooler hillside sites.
