From the northern reaches of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, Jean Fournier’s Côte de Nuits-Villages Croix Violette Vieilles Vignes 2022 is a powerful, old-vine expression of Pinot Noir with real depth and personality. Sourced from low-yielding, millerandage-affected vines, this cuvée offers remarkable concentration, a vivid violet hue and a strikingly intense flavour profile. It stands out as a village-level wine that drinks on a far more serious level, capturing both the finesse and the power that make the Côte de Nuits so revered.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep, vibrant violet-red colour, unusually intense for Pinot Noir and a clear sign of its low yields and old vines. The nose opens with waves of ripe black fruits—blackberry, black cherry and dark plum—interwoven with spicy notes of black pepper, clove and a hint of licorice, plus subtle undertones of violets and dark cocoa. On the palate, this is full-bodied and structured for a Côte de Nuits-Villages, with a core of very ripe black fruit supported by firm but fine-grained tannins. The spice notes from the nose carry through, joined by touches of graphite and a savoury, almost earthy mineral streak. The finish is long, broad and persistent, with the ripe black fruit and spice echoing for several seconds. While already generous and approachable in youth, the 2022 has the structure to evolve nicely over the next 7–10 years, gaining greater complexity and integration.

Production
Coming from old Pinot Noir vines in selected Côte de Nuits-Villages parcels, Croix Violette is rooted in classic Burgundian terroir: limestone-rich soils with clay and marl that naturally limit yields and enhance depth and minerality. The vines, many affected by millerandage (small, thick-skinned berries), produce highly concentrated fruit at very low yields, giving intensity and colour. Harvesting is typically done by hand to preserve berry integrity and enable strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification follows a traditional Burgundian approach, with gentle extraction to capture colour and structure without harshness, and élevage in French oak barrels (often with a restrained use of new oak) to refine the tannins and layer in subtle spice while keeping the purity of the fruit front and centre.

Food & Serving
This concentrated Côte de Nuits-Villages pairs beautifully with richer dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth: roast duck with cherries, coq au vin, rack of lamb, or slow-braised beef. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme. Serve at around 14–16°C to highlight both the fruit and the aromatic complexity. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if you’re serving it within a few years of the vintage.
