Description

J.B. Becker’s Riesling Eltviller Sonnenberg Spätlese 2018 is a classic Rheingau Riesling from one of the region’s most respected traditionalists. Sourced from the steep Sonnenberg vineyard above Eltville, this Spätlese captures the tension between ripe late-harvest fruit and vibrant, slate-driven minerality. It’s a characterful, ageworthy white that appeals both to serious collectors and to anyone who simply loves expressive, handcrafted Riesling. The hallmark of this wine is its precision: J.B. Becker is known for dry-leaning, firmly structured Rieslings that age beautifully, and this Spätlese is no exception. Eltviller Sonnenberg has long been prized for its sun-exposed slopes and mineral soils, which historically have delivered powerful yet finely etched wines that reflect the Rheingau’s heritage as one of Germany’s great Riesling strongholds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Eltviller Sonnenberg Spätlese 2018 typically shows a bright, pale lemon to light gold hue, with a touch more depth of color reflecting its late-harvest ripeness and a few years of bottle evolution. Swirl the glass and you can expect an inviting, layered nose: ripe stone fruits such as white peach and apricot, yellow apple and citrus zest, lifted by floral notes of white blossom and a hint of herbs. Underneath sits a cool, slatey minerality, with subtle nuances of smoke or petrol emerging with air and time in the bottle. On the palate, this is a focused and finely structured Spätlese, combining succulent, late-harvest fruit with a firm spine of Rheingau acidity. Expect flavors of juicy peach, mirabelle, lime and ripe pear, interwoven with salty, stony undertones and a gentle sweetness that feels balanced rather than opulent. The mouthfeel is both mouthfilling and precise, with a long, tapering finish that leaves a citrus-mineral echo. 2018 offers approachable richness in its youth, but the wine has clear aging potential: 10–15 years from the vintage is realistic, during which it will develop more honeyed, waxy and smoky tertiary notes while retaining freshness.

Production
The Eltviller Sonnenberg vineyard rises above the town of Eltville on sun-drenched slopes characteristic of the Rheingau, with well-drained, stony and slate-influenced soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Riesling here benefits from warm daytime exposure and cooling evening breezes from the Rhine, helping to preserve acidity while achieving optimal ripeness for a Spätlese harvest. Grapes are typically handpicked in selective passes, ensuring that only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches make it into the cellar. In keeping with J.B. Becker’s traditional, low-intervention philosophy, fermentation usually takes place in large, old wooden casks with native yeasts, followed by extended aging on the lees to build texture and complexity, and minimal fining or filtration to preserve the wine’s character and natural structure.

Food & Serving
This Spätlese is extremely versatile at the table and shines with both refined and comfort-driven dishes. Pair it with Asian-inspired cuisine—think lightly spiced Thai salads, sushi, sashimi or aromatic Vietnamese dishes—where its fruit and acidity complement fresh herbs and gentle heat. It is also superb with classic German fare like roasted pork, schnitzel or smoked trout, as well as white meat, poultry, creamy poultry terrines, and soft-ripened cheeses. Spicy dishes with chili heat, aromatic curries, or rich shellfish like scallops and lobster can also work beautifully. Serve it chilled, around 8–10°C (46–50°F), slightly warmer if you want to accentuate aromatic complexity. A short decant of 15–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle in advance and using generous glasses, will help the wine open up and reveal its full range of aromas.

Producer
J.B. Becker Weinbau – Weinhandel OHG is a historic, family-run estate in the Rheingau, headquartered in Walluf, and widely admired by sommeliers and enthusiasts for its uncompromisingly traditional style. The Becker family has been cultivating vines for generations, focusing primarily on Riesling (and some Spätburgunder), and has gained a reputation for producing structured, ageworthy wines that defy trends and reward patience. In a region with a long, distinguished history, J.B. Becker stands out for its adherence to old-school methods: handwork in the vineyards, spontaneous fermentations, maturation in large, old casks, and a philosophy that prioritizes authenticity over fashion. Their Rieslings, including bottlings from sites such as Eltviller Sonnenberg, have quietly become insider favorites, often showing remarkably well in mature tastings and underscoring the estate’s significance in the Rheingau’s quality renaissance.
