Description
Javier Sanz Viticultor’s V Dulce de Invierno 2022 is a distinctive sweet wine from Rueda, crafted from a blend of Verdejo and Gorda de Moldavia (Muscat). With its rare air-dried fruit and barrel aging, it offers an elegant expression of old-vine tradition, local identity, and artisanal winemaking that reflects more than 150 years of family history.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, this sweet wine shows a luminous golden tone. The nose is expressive and layered, with notes of ripe stone fruit, dried apricot, honey, floral muscat character, and a subtle touch of oak from French barrel aging.
On the palate, it is rich yet well balanced, combining concentrated sweetness with freshness and a refined, silky texture. The Verdejo brings structure and lift, while the Muscat adds aromatic depth and a lush, fruity finish. Thanks to its balance and complexity, it should age gracefully for several years, developing more honeyed and nutty nuances over time.
Production
The grapes come from a mosaic of small parcels in La Seca, Valladolid, where the soils are dominated by gravel and pebbles and the continental climate brings warm days, cool nights, and low humidity. These conditions help preserve freshness and intensity in the fruit. For V Dulce de Invierno, the grapes are carefully selected and left to dry before fermentation and aging, concentrating sugars and flavor.
After this natural drying process, the wine matures for eight months in French oak barrels, which adds texture, depth, and a gentle spicy complexity without overpowering the wine’s aromatic profile.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, around 8–10°C, to keep the wine fresh and expressive. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit tarts, almond-based desserts, panna cotta, and pastries with honey or dried fruit. Decanting is generally not necessary, though a short period in the glass can help release its aromatic layers.
Producer
Javier Sanz Viticultor is a respected family estate in Rueda, built on a philosophy of preserving pre-phylloxera vineyards, native grape varieties, and nearly extinct local cultivars. The winery cultivates 104 hectares across La Seca and has become known for combining heritage with sustainable viticulture and a strong sense of regional identity. Now in its fourth generation, the family continues a winemaking tradition that spans more than 150 years and has helped keep Rueda’s reputation strong.
