Description
Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino 2023 is a classic, charming expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most respected estates. Made from younger vineyard parcels, it offers the grape’s brighter, more approachable side while still delivering the structure and depth that make wines from this region so compelling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows an intense ruby-red color. The nose is fresh and fruit-driven, with classic aromas of red berries and cherry, giving it an immediate sense of lift and energy.
On the palate, it is beautifully balanced: structured yet supple, with silky tannins and a long, harmonious finish. Thanks to its careful élevage, it carries a touch more complexity and softness than many wines in the Rosso di Montalcino category, and it should drink well now while still having the ability to develop further over the next few years.
Production
This Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese sourced from younger parcels planted at altitudes between 150 and 450 meters. The grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation takes place with native yeasts and around 15 days of skin contact at controlled temperatures, helping preserve purity, freshness, and varietal character.
After fermentation, the wine is matured in large French oak casks and barriques, followed by bottle aging. This combination adds nuance, texture, and gentle polish while keeping the wine firmly grounded in its Tuscan roots.
Food & Serving
A versatile and food-friendly red, it is an excellent match for pasta dishes with meat sauces, grilled or roasted meats, and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C; decanting is optional, but a short decant of 30 minutes can help open the wine and soften its youthful edge.
Producer
Tenuta Il Poggione is one of Montalcino’s historic and highly regarded producers, with a long-standing reputation for crafting wines of depth, balance, and longevity. The estate has played an important role in defining the area’s classic style, and is especially celebrated for its Brunello di Montalcino, which has earned it a place among the region’s benchmark wineries.
