Description
Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Paganelli is a rare single-vineyard statement wine, released only in outstanding vintages and sourced entirely from the estate’s oldest vineyard in Montalcino. Produced in the celebrated 2019 vintage and already praised by leading critics, it stands as one of the estate’s most compelling expressions of Sangiovese and a benchmark for Brunello Riserva.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby-red color with a developing garnet-brown rim, a sign of its extended élevage and early evolution. The bouquet is impressively open for a wine of this stature, unfolding with notes of ripe cherry, plum, and layers of spice from oak aging.
The palate is powerful and highly concentrated, with vivid fruit intensity wrapped around firm acidity and substantial tannins. Oak-derived spice adds complexity without overshadowing the purity of the Sangiovese fruit, and the overall balance suggests excellent aging potential. While already impressive, this is a wine that should gain even greater depth and harmony with time in the cellar.
Production
Paganelli is made exclusively from grapes grown in Il Poggione’s oldest vineyard in Montalcino, a site regarded as a reference point for how a single-vineyard Brunello should express its terroir. The 2019 vintage’s quality gave the estate confidence to produce this Riserva after having last done so in the legendary 2016 vintage, underscoring the strict selection behind the wine. Careful harvesting and long maturation are central to its production, allowing the Sangiovese to develop complexity, structure, and the refined character that defines the cuvée.
Food & Serving
This is a superb match for rich Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised wild boar, lamb shank, or porcini mushroom risotto, as well as aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if opening young, as this will help reveal its layered aromatics and soften the tannins.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of the most respected historic estates in Montalcino, long associated with consistency, age-worthy Brunello, and a deep understanding of Sangiovese. The estate has earned a strong reputation both in Tuscany and internationally for producing wines of precision, depth, and classic structure, and Paganelli represents one of its highest-level bottlings. The acclaim surrounding the 2019 release, including a top ranking in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2025, further confirms its standing among the region’s elite producers.
