Description
Il Poggione’s Brunello di Montalcino 2013 is a striking expression of Sangiovese from one of Tuscany’s most respected estates. Deep, polished and classically structured, it combines generous fruit with the refined complexity that has made Brunello one of Italy’s most admired wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby core with the kind of concentration expected from a serious Brunello. The nose opens with black cherry and spiced plum, then layers in gentle oak tones of smoke, tar and toasted nuts, alongside crushed stone, dried herbs and a hint of mint.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant, with vibrant acidity and a firm tannic frame that gives shape to the ripe fruit. It is already showing graceful development, but its structure suggests an excellent aging potential over many years, gaining even more nuance and complexity with cellaring.
Production
Made from Sangiovese grown in the Montalcino zone of Tuscany, where warm days, cool nights and well-drained soils help create wines with both power and finesse. The 2013 vintage benefited from careful vineyard work and a traditional approach to harvesting and vinification, preserving freshness, purity and the variety’s signature character. The result is a Brunello that balances ripe fruit, savory detail and the restrained oak influence expected from a high-quality estate wine.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a superb partner for rich Tuscan dishes, grilled or roasted red meats, braised lamb, game, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours when young to allow the aromatics and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic reference producers of Montalcino, long recognized for wines that combine tradition, consistency and ageworthiness. The estate has earned a strong reputation for producing Brunello of depth and elegance, and it remains one of the benchmark names in the region, with broad international acclaim and a loyal following among collectors.
