Description
Il Marroneto Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie 2019 is a powerful yet remarkably elegant expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino’s most revered crus. This cuvée is known for its depth, energy and almost untamed personality, offering layers that unfold slowly in the glass. Often imitated but never matched, Madonna delle Grazie has become a modern benchmark for pure, traditional Brunello that marries luminosity with impressive structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Madonna delle Grazie shows a vibrant, medium-deep ruby garnet hue, shimmering at the rim with youthful brightness. The nose is immediate and captivating: sweet-tart cranberry and wild red cherry mingle with hints of coriander seed, crushed cola nut, licorice root and a lifted touch of white pepper. Subtle notes of dried rose petals, blood orange zest, and warm earth add further complexity with air.
On the palate, the wine is both lithe and powerful, with a striking sense of inner energy. Red berries and pomegranate lead, supported by savory herbal tones and a saline, mineral backbone that speaks clearly of its hillside origins. The tannins are fine, chalky and beautifully “dusty,” coating the mouth without heaviness, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything precise and long. There is a gentle, almost singing sweetness of fruit at the core, never cloying, just ripe and luminous. This 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should start to show its best from around 2026 and will continue to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years in a good cellar.
Production
Madonna delle Grazie comes from vineyards surrounding the tiny church of the same name, on the cool northern slopes of Montalcino in Tuscany. Here, the combination of altitude, ventilated exposures, and stony, mineral-rich soils produces Sangiovese (Brunello) of exceptional fragrance and tension. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Il Marroneto works in a distinctly traditional style: spontaneous fermentations in large wooden vats or steel, gentle extraction to preserve finesse, and extended maturation in large Slavonian oak botti rather than small new barriques. This low-intervention, long-aging approach allows the terroir’s purity and the clarity of the vintage to take center stage.
Food & Serving
This Brunello calls for refined yet flavorful dishes that can complement its structure and aromatic complexity: think Tuscan bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary, braised veal shank, or game birds with wild mushrooms and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, or truffle-infused dishes featuring porcini or polenta. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux stems to let the aromatics unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered, high-toned character.
Producer
Il Marroneto was founded in 1974 by Alessandro Mori’s family and has, over the decades, become one of the most respected traditional estates in Montalcino. Located on the cooler, high-altitude northern side of the appellation, the winery is renowned for producing Brunello that emphasizes purity, tension and aromatic lift over sheer weight. Madonna delle Grazie is Il Marroneto’s flagship bottling, sourced from some of its oldest and most privileged vines, and it is frequently cited by critics and collectors as one of the finest and most distinctive Brunellos produced in any vintage. With a steadfast commitment to classic methods and to expressing the nuances of site and season, Il Marroneto has secured a place among the elite names of Tuscany and the broader world of fine wine.
