Description
Il Conte Villa Prandone’s Marche Rocciamara 2023 is a distinctive red from the hills of Monteprandone in Italy’s Marche region. Its character comes from the estate’s unique approach of fermenting red and white grapes together, creating a wine that combines ripe dark fruit with fresh, aromatic nuances, structured tannins and an elegant, lingering finish. The estate has deep roots in the Ascoli Piceno area, where generations of experience have shaped its connection to the local vineyards and soils.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-red in the glass, the wine opens with inviting aromas of blackberry and cranberry, complemented by subtle notes of white peach, mint, star anise and a delicate touch of black pepper. The nose balances ripe fruit with a fresh, lifted herbal and spicy character.
On the palate, Rocciamara is firm and refined, with a complex structure and a steady tannic backbone. The fruit remains fresh and focused, while the well-integrated tannins carry through to a long, balanced finish. It is approachable in its youth but should develop added harmony and complexity over the next few years when properly stored.
Production
The vineyards lie among the rolling hills near Monteprandone in the province of Ascoli Piceno, influenced by cooling breezes from both the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mountains. This healthy, well-balanced microclimate encourages even grape ripening. The grapes are gently pressed, and the red and white varieties are co-fermented for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 12–18°C. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes an initial maturation in cement tanks, including malolactic fermentation, before spending a further 12 months ageing in tonneaux.
Food & Serving
Its firm structure and vibrant fruit make Rocciamara a versatile partner for grilled or roasted red meats, herb-seasoned lamb, wild boar, hearty pasta dishes and mature cheeses. It is best served slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended, particularly when serving the wine young, to allow its fruit, spice and tannins to open fully.
