Hudson Vineyard Phoenix 2022

Hudson Vineyard Phoenix 2022 is a limited-production Bordeaux-inspired blend from California’s Carneros district, composed only from the estate’s finest barrels. Named in reference to the devastating 2017 Napa Valley wildfires, Phoenix represents the Hudson family’s resilience and renewal after the flames surrounded the property while leaving its original 1980s buildings remarkably intact.

Tasting Notes
Deep and richly coloured in the glass, the 2022 Phoenix opens with an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, blackberry and red plum. Layers of cedar, graphite, violet, dark chocolate and sweet spice add complexity and reflect the wine’s extended maturation in French oak. The palate is full-bodied yet silk-textured, with a concentrated core of dark fruit, finely grained tannins and lively acidity that brings freshness and poise. The long, layered finish reveals espresso, cocoa, tobacco and crushed-stone notes. Already compelling for its balance, the wine should develop beautifully over the next 15–20 years when properly cellared.

Production
The blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc comes from selected parcels in Hudson Vineyard’s Carneros estate. Each parcel is harvested by hand at night, carefully sorted and vinified separately using native yeast. Following fermentation, the lots spend 23 months in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of them new, before bottling without fining or filtration to preserve depth, texture and complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come close to room temperature. Its concentration and structured tannins make it an excellent match for roasted or grilled beef, lamb, venison, beef tenderloin and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, while aged hard cheeses will also complement its depth. Decant for approximately 1–2 hours when drinking young; older bottles should be decanted carefully to remove any sediment without overexposing the wine to air.

Hudson Vineyard is a respected estate in Carneros, Napa Valley, with a hands-on approach centred on expressing both the vineyard and the character of each vintage. The winemaking team reflects a long-standing collaboration between Lee and Cristina Hudson, John Kongsgaard and Christopher Vandendriessche. All vineyard work is carried out manually, and Phoenix is produced only from barrels that meet the estate’s exacting standards, making it one of Hudson’s most limited and ambitious wines.
