Hudson Vineyard Estate Chardonnay 2023

Hudson Vineyard Estate Chardonnay 2023 is a highly sought-after California Chardonnay made from the legendary Old Wente clone grown on Hudson’s own Home Ranch and Henry Road Ranch vineyards. Combining the cool influence of San Pablo Bay with naturally low yields and meticulous élevage, it offers the depth and precision of a top white Burgundy while retaining the distinctive energy and mineral character of its Carneros terroir. With only around 1,500 cases produced and outstanding critical acclaim—including 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck—it is a wine that tends to disappear quickly.

Tasting Notes
Bright and golden in the glass, the 2023 opens with an expressive bouquet of lemon cream, white peach, ripe pear and grilled pineapple, followed by hints of almond croissant, acacia honey and toasted hazelnut. On the palate, it is intense and beautifully layered, combining ripe apple, stone fruit, mango and citrus with notes of brioche, vanilla and crushed limestone. Lively acidity keeps the generous fruit and oak in perfect balance, while the long, mineral finish leaves a subtle saline impression. This is a powerful yet refined Chardonnay with excellent concentration and structure. It can be enjoyed now with a little air, but should develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years under proper cellar conditions.

Production
The grapes come from Hudson’s Home Ranch and Henry Road Ranch vineyards, where the cool climate shaped by San Pablo Bay and stony, clay-rich soils encourage small berries with remarkable concentration, pronounced minerality and vibrant natural acidity. All vineyard work is carried out by hand, with the Old Wente clone harvested for purity and intensity. For the 2023 vintage, the winemaking team matured the wine for 22 months on its lees in 70% new French oak, building texture and depth while preserving the wine’s freshness and terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. Its richness and acidity make it an excellent match for roast chicken, lobster, scallops, grilled or pan-fried fish, creamy seafood dishes and poultry with buttery sauces. It also pairs well with mature soft cheeses and dishes featuring mushrooms or roasted cauliflower. Decanting is not essential, but 30–45 minutes in a carafe can help reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity when enjoyed young.

The 2023 vintage received 96 points from Jeb Dunnuck, 95 from Lisa Perrotti-Brown, and 94 points from both The Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator.
